The Growling/Screaming Vocals Respect Thread (ARRR!!)

Some of the bands that I appreciate...

Isis:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/21BGHs0QJXg&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/21BGHs0QJXg&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Silverstein (also has some clean vocals mixed in):
<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Y9dlsuWrrIs&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Y9dlsuWrrIs&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

Dillinger Escape Plan:

I'd bet a dollar that Adam Jones from Tool had something to do with that Isis video.

Actually, he didn't. Or at least, they've never admitted to such.

But, Adam did play on two tracks from Isis' "Wavering Radiant" album, and Justin Chancellor plays guitar on an instrumental Isis song, "Altered Course," from the "Panopticon" album (still my favourite album...)

I just don't understand the appeal, I guess. And I love Slayer!

You know... I can't exactly explain it. I can't explain why I like Rascal Flatts, either.

Mike Patton explained it to the effect of "the voice is just another instrument," meaning, for those bands, that type of vocalization is more effective than clean vocals in those specific songs.

I tend to lean more towards the vocalists that can switch between clean vocals and screaming/growling; like the guy in Silverstein does, sometimes mid-sentence.

Anyway, to keep the thread going, here's another favourite...

Whoever thought that the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street would be the biggest influence on today's "metal"?

and because it will piss off Beavis 69 if he were to join us in this thread

and while i'm at it, yes i can understand the vocals, and for the most part, can tell the vocalists apart (ie if a song comes on xm, i can tell who it is w/out looking at the artist info)

And if someone is looking for a group that can switch between clean and screaming/growls

This. Like the low-tuned distorted guitars and furious double bass and blast beats the growling/screaming vocals are an element of the extreme. Death metal became popular in the '90s so "Cookie Monster" vocals became more prevalent. It is nice to hear bands mixing it up with clean vocals now.

A lot of growlers/screamers do sound the same but some have found their own voice within the genre. I like John Tardy of Obituary.

I'm not a huge fan of this type of singing but I like a few who do it like KITTIE and Pantera.

that album (beyond that song) is pretty weak (as is the previous and current album). I wish I'd seen them pre-Clayman.....

These type of screamy vocals don't bother me because they seem more real and less theatrical.
