Music videos that pay homage to films

Just like the thread title says, something that's been fascinating me lately are music videos that heavily allude to movies. It's interesting to see which films are being referenced and how well the music actually matches up.

There are lots of cheesy examples of this - Paula Abdul's "Rush Rush" video that recreates Rebel Without a Cause springs to mind - but sometimes it is done very, very well.

My favorites are:

Blur - "To the End"
A really beautiful pastiche of Alain Resnais' Last Year At Marienbad, which I love. Even better than "The Universal" homage to Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange.
<embed width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q6TzQlTzbLc&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed>

U2 - "Stay (Faraway, So Close)"
Great homage to Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire.
<embed width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/S4McHZksLBE&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed>

Smashing Pumpkins - "Tonight, Tonight"
They make great videos in general, but the fact that this was directly inspired by Georges Melies' A Trip to the Moon makes it my favorite by them.
<embed width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YEvVIgCm1zg&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed>

Michael Jackson - "Smooth Criminal"
Even though it's in a movie, this incredible sequence pays homage to a Fred Astaire dance scene in The Band Wagon. It's still one of the best MJ videos ever.
<embed width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ex30DYwQlHU&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed>

So I'm curious, out of all the film-referencing music videos out there, which is your favorite? Is it because of the band or because of the movie it alludes to?

2Pac and Dr. Dre's homage to the Mad Max films (with a little Warriors shout-out):

Re: Music videos that pay homage to films

It's not really a homage since it's made in conjunction with the film, but Aimee Mann's "Save Me" video is a stunner, especially to those who have seen the movie Magnolia.

Not a favorite, just one that popped into my head.

Slipknot - Spit it Out
The Shining

I don't know if the OP realizes it, but that U2 video is more than an homage, since the song is in the film Faraway, So Close! (which is a semi-sequel to Wings of Desire). The video was directed by Wim Wenders.

Metallica's ONE video (and song) are based on "Johnny Got His Gun"

The video for Everybody Hurts by REM is an homage to the opening scene in Fellini's 8 1/2

Rob Zombie's "Never Gonna Stop" is a direct homage to "A Clockwork Orange"

Imbedding disabled for some reason.

I never knew that (having never seen 8 1/2) and have always admired that video.
Even the Wikipedia listing doesn't mention that in their entry.

There was a video playing on Palladia last year. Forgot the name of the band and the song but it was a post-appocalyptic western. Long list of movies to pay homage to

There are likely many, many of these, but just offhand I can only add:

La jetée --> David Bowie's Jump They Say
Danger: Diabolik --> The Beastie Boys' Body Movin'

Ah, I didn't know this. Thanks! I've never seen Faraway, So Close! but really want to watch it now... and I'm dying to get my hands on that Wings of Desire Criterion already.

That REM/Fellini homage is great. Seen 8 1/2 so many times but haven't seen the "Everybody Hurts" video in years so never made the connection.

Keep 'em coming!

Wasn't there a Jay-Z video that was pretty much "The Usual Suspects"?

Lady Sovereign - "I Got You Dancing"
(Homage to The Warriors)

<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8L66w0qtLDU&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8L66w0qtLDU&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Mylene Farmer - "L'ame-stram-gram"
(Not a homage to any specific movie, but to Hong Kong cinema in general. It was directed by Ching Siu Tung and has a bit of A Chinese Ghost Storyfeel.)

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vnqKuXa9yMw&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vnqKuXa9yMw&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Evangelicals - "Midnight Vignette"
(Also not a homage to any specific film, but a cool recreation of '70's slasher/grindhouse movies)

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QzAcuQHm9R0&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QzAcuQHm9R0&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Can't be sure, but I always thought her video for "Deeper and Deeper" was a nod to Warhol films.
