Take a look, for example, at the version of "Walcott" from the EP and then the reworked version on their eponymous debut. Worlds of difference.

I've warmed up to Horchata as well. I'm actually thinking it's a pretty great song.

I've also been listening to their cover of Exit Music (For a Film), which is also fantastic.

The "Cousins" video is pretty good and I love the song. Anticipation is high for new album.

Also, the cover to Contra would be even better if the girl had a black eye.

I think this record is going to be a grower. Both "Horchata" and "Cousins" were underwhelming on first listen but now I can't get enough.

Not sure when it started but I noticed that http://www.vampireweekend.com/ is now streaming the entire album, in case you haven't, ahem, acquired it. It's really, really good. Sophomore slump officially averted. "Run and "Giving up the Gun" are both terrific new sounds for this band.

I'm baffled by the praise for this album so far.

I've listened to it a few times now and it is pretty clear that they have only one idea. And that idea is tired.

I disagree. To me, this album shows a fair amount of development of the ideas of the first one, certainly as much or more than most bands develop by their sophomore album. They're incorporating more electronics, more Caribbean influences and even some of that new-fangled autotune. Also, the lyrics are sharper and less snarky than the first album.

What is starting to irritate me is the backlash against this band. I completely understand not liking this band because you don't like the music they make, but I don't understand the depth of some people's hangups to their "politics". Some people that hate them seem to be unable to get over their Columbia/preppy/Upper West Side origins to the point where they can't hear the music. To cite one example, Sound Opinion's Jim DeRogatis was practically foaming at the mouth reviewing this record. He hate, hate, hated it and yet none of his review actually talked about the music. It was like listening to Bill O'Reilly review the latest Thermals record: all politics, no meat.

In case people don't check the Amazon thread every day, this MP3 album is the deal of the day for $3.99.

God, I hate everything about this album. One of the most annoying things I've heard in a very long time.

I didn't care for their last album either, but they showed potential to grow, not get worse.

Re: Vampire Weekend: Contra - 1/12/10

I might warm up to it on further listens, but I have to admit to not really digging this one. I love their debut, and I appreciate the fact that the band isn't just trying to rehash more of the same, but none of their pop hooks are piercing the skin this time around.

I agree with Sessa17. If you kids are digging it, well that's fine. Personally, though, I find absolutely nothing about it, or them, interesting in the least. For me they're just a big "yeah, whatever", but if you dig, have at them.

The only song I find myself going back to on this CD is "White Sky"...but that is a damn good song.
