Scarlett Johansson released another album today, only this time it's a collaboration with Pete Yorn. I really didn't like Anywhere I Lay My Head and her monotone, emotionless Nico-esque vocals on that album. In fact, it was the worst album I listened to in 2008.

Well, I gave her singing a second chance today. Maybe it's because she changed her style up* and doesn't sound so bored or that she doesn't have to carry the whole album by herself, but I'm actually digging Break Up. I'd heard of Yorn before, but never listened to his music before. I'll have to check out some of his other stuff.



*I read somewhere that this was actually recorded before her Tom Waits tribute.

I love both albums. The Tom Waits cover was obviously her impersonating one of Tom Waits' many vocal styles which many did not understand or get (especially the younger fans that don't even know who the hell Waits is).

It's obvious the girl can sing given her Summertime cover and the 'Break Up' album. Her experimentation failed to meet the public 'standards', though, and that's a shame. "Who Are You" and "Fannin Street" are only two (my favorites to be exact) of the really amazing covers and only add to the aloof, haunting feeling of the album. Her stark vocals and the whirlwind production, both different beasts, meld well together.

As for Break Up - it's great. She's amazing on 'Clean' and the entire production is crisp and very swift. 'Blackie's Dead' is another fave.

I'm glad the singing thing is working out for her. Now we can still enjoy her looks without putting up with her "acting".

She DID NOT impersonate Tom Waits's vocal styles on her previous album. To say that she did is an insult to Mr. Waits and his fans. This broad sucks.

I don't care if you like her acting or not; it was your failed attempt at being clever by placing information like that in a spoiler that got eyerolls. And, yes, I've seen The Black Dahlia and even two time Oscar winner Hilary Swank was really bad. So what? The girl's obviously doing something right - she's getting work and you're sitting on DVDTalk complaining about her.

I see she found her own little M. Ward in Pete Yorn. Surprised she didn't call it "Him and She"

This album was recorded in 2006 around the same time She and Him got together to record. And Pete Yorn went to her. The idea was his and she thought it was a good one and decided to record with him.

I like probably the first four or five tracks on the Pete, Scarlett album. Her solo CD was extremely too mellow for me to buy.

I didnt hate her first album, didnt LOVE it but liked it. Was hoping she would take some more chances vocally with it. Of course the fact she did a whole album of Waits covers was taking a chance but thought it could have been better.

I am a huge Waits fan and I certainly do not think she sucks either.

I do think she is quite talented, a fine actress, and a drop dead gorgeous woman.
