Recommend me some female singer/songwriters/bands in the vein of ...

Rilo Kiley
Jenny Lewis
The Cardigans
A Camp
Neko Case
Lily Allen
She & Him
Duffy
Juliana Hatfield

These are the artists I've been listening to. A lot.

But I am wondering if anyone has any recommendations for other artists/bands in the same vein. Essentially looking for that kind of retro/motown/acoustic/folk vibe, if that makes any sense at all. Zune and Amazon similar artist searches can only take your so far, after all.

(I did a search for a similar thread (could have sworn I saw one, even posted in one, before), but didn't find what I was looking for.)

Cat Power - I think this one would be a sure fire fit in the list

Regina Spektor - Probably fits well too

Imogen Heap - I like some of her stuff, some I could leave

Emily Haines (Metric, Broken Social Scene, Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton) - This one is more out there, but she has an endearing voice

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - for motown music

Maura Davis stuff (Ambulette, Denali, Glos) - This may be more of a long shot too... but she's a pretty powerful vocalist

That's all off the top of my head right now though, and some of them might no be exactly what you are looking for

I'm a HUGE fan of Jenny, Cardigans, Neko, & Zooey, Lily & Duffy are dreadful tripe, & Hatfield confuses me a bit on what you are looking for since she has nothing to do with the retro/motown/folk vibe.

That said, you need to run out now & get both of St.Vincent's albums. She is the most talented female in the genre by far, writes & composes all her own music, very complex stuff, & she is probably a better guitarist than any male-genre musician. Plus, she is stunningly beautiful & a huge movie buff, her latest album was inspired by marathoning through the Criterion Film collection.

St. Vincent sounds interesting, I'll be looking her up.

Anyway, another suggestion would be:

Brandi Carlile (listen to the song "Closer to You")

You'd probably also like the Grey's Anatomy Soundtrack (three volumes), and the soundtrack to the new movie "(500) Days of Summer".

Re: Recommend me some female singer/songwriters/bands in the vein of ...

Thanks for the input so far, I'll give these artists a sample to see how they fit in. A few of them I've actually already listened to, but they didn't stick with me as well as the ones in my list (such as Metric and Cat Power).

Haven't listened to St. Vincent yet, though I remember you bringing her up in another thread, Sessa17.

I guess my tastes lean more toward the "girly/innocent" voiced singers, like Zooey and Jenny. I know some might find Duffy's voice a little grating, but she's good in moderation, perhaps. Lily is good when you're in the mood for some upbeat pop. Since I liked Lily, I thought I might sample some songs from the American Lily (aka Katy Perry), but she's too "Pink" for me. I find it amazing that the voice does not match her looks at all. And Juliana Hatfield I like, probably because her voice is very similar to Jenny Lewis (at least on a lot of songs from her last album, "How to Walk Away").

Listen to Marry Me a couple of times by ST. Vincent, post what you think.

What you are definitely looking for in the retro-folky vein would be Sarah Harmer, she sings on Neko Case's last album. I'm A Mountain is my personal favorite album of hers.

Re: Recommend me some female singer/songwriters/bands in the vein of ...

Jenny Lewis for is my favorite female voice, so you can base my recommendations from there, Emily Haines is my favorite sweet female voice, I could listen to her sing anything, Annie (who is St. Vincent) is my favorite female talent.

If you want retro sweetness, the Under the Covers albums with Susanna Hoffs & Mathew Sweet are a lot of fun.

Bat For Lashes - Two Suns is one of my favorite albums from this year.

Gemma Hayes - Another stunning beauty, try the song Back of My Hand, she has a really powerful sweet/folky voice.

I <3 this thread so much.

I've got something by everyone mentioned in this thread so far, minus 2 or 3.

There's two recent discoveries of mine I'll mention:

Subscribe to "All Songs Considered Concert Podcast" on iTunes which has concerts that are free and are in .mp3 format, most are about 90 minutes long.

Here are some concerts to start you off, and I just noticed that there is a St. Vincent concert that I'll need to listen to myself.

Neko Case: Newport Folk Festival 2009, 8/3/09
Gillian Welsch: Newport Folk Festival 2009, 8/2/09 (bluegrass)
St. Vincent, 5/26/09
Neko Case (Middle Cyclone Tour) 4/10/09
M. Ward, 2/26/09 (the "him" half of "She & Him")
She & Him: Newport Folk Festival 2008, 8/11/08 (very good concert!)
Neko Case, 11/21/07
The New Pornopgraphers, 9/26/07
Rilo Kiley, 11/15/07

A few other concerts that I thought were really good were Nickel Creek, 11/6/07 and Black Mountain, 2/21/08, and Jose Gonzalez (a Swedish singer), 11/4/07.

How do you feel about foreign-language music? There're a lot of French female singer-songwriters you might enjoy.

I'm a big fan of Juliana Hatfield, Duffy, Rilo Kiley, The Cardigans, and Lily Allen. Don't listen to the rest. (yet...)

I'm going to second Liz Phair, Mazzy Star, Feist, Metric and Regina Spektor.

I'll also add Fiona Apple (especially when the pawn), Alana Davis, Aimee Mann, Billie Holliday (though a fair bit different than your preferred), Ella Fitzgerald (same as previous), Nikka Costa, Poe, The Sundays, Norah Jones, Suzanne Vega, Tanya Donnelly's solo stuff (especially Beautysleep), and some of Tori Amos' stuff may appeal to you.

If you sometimes like some guitars with your female singer/songwriters, let me add Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ida Maria, The Donnas, Elastica, The Distillers (esp. Coral Fang), The Breeders, and Auf der Maur.
