what OLD songs did you "discover" from Film Soundtracks?

For example, I did not grow up listening to Oldies because my parents didn't really play the radio or anything (weirdos), so I didn't really start listening to music until my late teens.

Anyway, I first heard "Everyday" by Buddy Holly by watching 1986's Stand By Me. Later on, when I was digging into music history, I was astounded to find out that Everyday was not a Top 40 single - I digress.....

Due to 1987's Dirty Dancing, I first heard "Love Is Strange" by Mickey and Sylvia...

That being the case, my hat is off to you for being so "computer-literate," acting like us young'ins (if you consider 39 a young'in)

I'm thinking the Creation, Making Time is in the movie Rushmore. Jimmy Page took his bowing the guitar bit from them, uncredited of course.

@8:03 Definitely the first thing that came to my mind.

Stupid thing doesn't allow embedding.

I'm 52 with siblings 59, 62 and 64. Exposure to the early stuff came from them always having the radio on and playing their 45s. However, I am old enough to have owned the 45 of "Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes" in junior high.

I got exposed to "Come Dancing" by The Kinks in 1983 due to my sister being five-years older than me (17). Now I always associate that song with her - plus the fact the song is about Ray Davies older sister from his point of view.

This may sound silly but the first time I heard "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult was in the intro to the Stand mini-series. Such a great intro too.

This song was ancient by the time I heard it in 8 Mile:

for some reason i never got around to listening to Blue Oyster Cult. I heard about them but never got around to buying a CD or finding one. That is until I saw Lars Ulrich wearing their t-shirt on Flight 666 and decided to plug them into one of my Slacker stations.

Re: what OLD songs did you "discover" from Film Soundtracks?

I thank Quentin Tarantino for introducing me to Dave, Dee, Koz, Deeky, Beeky, and Tich (I know that's wrong) and their song Hold Tight - through that song, I discovered other gems they did in the late 1960's. Good stuff.

Too many to name, but as far as most-favorites go, "Walk on By" by Isaac Hayes (Dead Presidents). I was first introduced to it via sample on a Compton's Most Wanted song, but hearing the full song in it's entirety for the first time blew me away.

The O Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack was a real eye-opener for me.

I had been courting the song on and off for a while, but finally I was watching Casino on tv one night and after hearing a piece of House of the Rising Sun by the Animals for the upteenth time, I cracked and bought an album... that led to so much goodness...

"The Israelites" by Desmond Dekker and The Aces.

I first heard this in Drugstore Cowboy. It was a Top 10 hit in the U.S. in 1969

I was about to reply that you seemed to have missed the OP's point...unless, of course, this song was on a soundtrack to your sister's life or something.

But then I realized that you're the OP.

So now I'm thoroughly confused.

If you get a chance, listen to the whole (4 tracks!) Hot Buttered Soul (1969) album the full-length song comes from. That is a powerful remake of the lighter Dionne Warwick version - it is truly a beautiful, poignant song of despair.

Don't be. I was just trying to comfort the old fella who said that all these oldies were newies. Didn't mean to deviate from the original plan..
