Re: what OLD songs did you "discover" from Film Soundtracks?
For example, I did not grow up listening to Oldies because my parents didn't really play the radio or anything (weirdos), so I didn't really start listening to music until my late teens.
Anyway, I first heard "Everyday" by Buddy Holly by watching 1986's Stand By Me. Later on, when I was digging into music history, I was astounded to find out that Everyday was not a Top 40 single - I digress.....
Due to 1987's Dirty Dancing, I first heard "Love Is Strange" by Mickey and Sylvia...

Coincidentally, I heard The Creation on Little Steven's Underground Garage this morning and knew it was on the soundtrack of a Wes Anderson movie but couldn't remember which one. I meant to look it up once I got in the office, but...hey! You saved me the trouble.

There are some songs (or cover versions of songs) I discovered from TV shows and are now on my Ipod:
Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow -- Dave Mason -- from Studio 60
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley -- From West Wing
At This Moment - Billy and the Beaters -- From Family Ties

Not film so much, but I found a ton of great music and old songs from the Deadwood (HBO) show soundtrack. I highly recommend it if you're into blues or old country.

A lot of music from The Sopranos had been introduced to be through the show, and now are some of my favorite tunes.
I love the Emmylou Harris song "Heaven Only Knows" that opens Season 5.
several songs from Big Lebowski, Hotel California, Just Dropped In, great stuff.

It's mod/freakbeat/psych like the small faces, who, action, birds, attack, john's children, etc etc. I like them more than all of those bands except for the small faces maybe. It will start you off on a long addictive journey to having everything and anything mid-late '60s if you like it, at least that's how it was for me.

The films of Wes Anderson definitely showed me there was more to the Kinks than "You Really Got Me" and "All Day and All of the Night."
Tarantino's movies have made me check out a lot of older acts, like Dick Dale.

The Big Liebowski and the Kenny Rodgers song. I didn't even know Kenny Rodgers did any bad ass music.

Listening to Santo/Johnny's "Sleepwalk" at this moment. Just remembered that I first heard it in La Bamba.

If we're counting TV shows, Sealab 2021 opened me up to the wonderful world of Antonio Carlos Jobim via it's use of "Aguas De Marco".

I recently brought this cd with me on a camping trip and nobody ever heard it before. By the end of the weekend everybody was joyfully singing the songs out loud :-)
If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend the documentary concert "Down from the Mountain" featuring most of the performers from the soundtrack. I was already a fan of Allison Krause but I discovered Gillian Welch from that show and she's amazingly talented.
