"Unseen Power of the Picket Fence" - Pavement

Some bands I like to name check,
And one of them is REM,
Classic songs with a long history
Southern boys just like you and me.
R - E - M
Flashback to 1983,
Chronic Town was their first EP
Later on came Reckoning
Finster's art, and titles to match:
South Central Rain, Don't Go Back To Rockville,
Harbourcoat, Pretty Persuasion,
You were born to be a camera,
Time After Time was my least favourite song,
Time After Time was my least favourite song.
The singer, he had long hair
And the drummer he knew restrait.
And the bass man he had all the right moves
And the guitar player was no saint.
So lets go way back to the ancient times
When there were no 50 states,

And on a hill there stands Sherman
Sherman and his mates.
And they're marching through Georgia,
we're marching through Georgia,
we're marching through Georgia
G-G-G-G-Georgia
They're marching through Georgia,
we're marching through Georgia,
marching through Georgia
G-G-G-G-Georgia
and there stands REM

Weezer "Heart Songs"

Gordon Lightfoot sang a song about a boat that sank in the lake at the break of the morn'
and a cat named Stevens found a faith he could believe in and Joan Baez
never listened to too much jazz but hippie songs could be heard in our pad
Eddie Rabbit sang about how much he loved a rainy night
Abba, Devo, Benatar were there the day John Lennon died
Mr Springsteen said he had a hungry heart
Grover Washington was happy on the day he topped the chart

These are the songs...
these are my heart songs
they never feel wrong

and when I wake for goodness sake...
these are the songs I keep singing

Quiet Riot got me started with the banging of my head
Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Slayer taught me how to shred
I gotta admit though, sometimes I would listen to the radio
Debbie Gibson, tell me that you think we're all alone
Michael Jackson's in the mirror
Gotta have faith if I wanna see clear
Never gonna give you up, this new love a wishing well
It takes two to make a thing go right, if the fresh Prince starts a fight
Don't you worry for too long 'cause you know...

These are the songs...
these are my heart songs
they never feel wrong

and when I wake for goodness sake...
these are the songs I keep singing

Back in 1991 I wasn't having any fun
'til my roommate said "come on" and put a brand new record on
Had a baby on it, he was naked on it
then I heard the chords that broke the chains I had up on me
got together with my bros at some rehearsal studios
then we played our first rock show
and watched the fanbase start to grow
signed the deal that give the dough
to make a record of our own
the song come on the radio and now people go "This is the song"

These are my heart songs (these are my songs)
they never feel wrong (never feel wrong)
and when I wake for goodness sake
these are the songs I keep singing
(these are my heart songs)
these are the songs I keep singing
(they never feel wrong)
these are the songs I keep singing
(these are my heart songs)
these are the songs I keep singing
These are the songs I keep singing

He laughed about making that mistake once the song was done...I actually think it works better because they were kinda interchangable...

Haven't heard it in a long time, but here is a ton:

Mary Lou Lord (His Indie World)
I don't think I fit into his indie world
Guided By Voices and Velocity Girl
Eric's Trip and Rocket Ship, Rancid and Rocket from The Crypt
Bikini Kill and Built to Spill, it's plain to see that I don't fit
He says my songs are too deep and gloomy
He wishes that I could be more like Jenny Toomey
Just give me my Joni my Nick, Neil, and Bob
You can keep your Tsunami, your Slant 6 and Smog

What's the story he says Butterglory
I say what's the news he says the Silver Jews
His heavenly hang-up is getting me down
And it's making me wonder why he's hanging around

Cause I don't fit into his indie scene
Huggy Bear and Helium and Half-Japanese
Sebadoh and Sentridoh and Superchunk and I don't know
Doug and Lou and Calvin too and Kim and Kim and Kim and Kim
Yeah I’m stuck in the past and he's stuck on his four-track
But I can't get through to his one-track mind
I push play and record and a major chord
Maybe I’ll win his heart this time
Maybe I’ll win his heart this time

Local H "The One with 'Kid'" (song's about a messy breakup).

Give me my Zeppelin CDs
You know you took 'em, I know you did
Where's my Pretenders record
You know the one, the one with "Kid"

Where's all my AC/DCs
My Interpol, my Libertines
Where's all my Kyuss records
You never liked 'em until you met me

Sensations, frustrations, barbed wire for coronations
My "Heart of Glass" 12-inch is scratched
No matter what it's costing
Make sure you leave with nothing
Won't stand and watch you gut our home

More like every rap song, period.

One of my favorites:

Ice T, "Rap Games Hijacked"

A non rap one:

I said to Hank Williams, how lonely does it get.
Hank Williams hasn't answered yet
But I still hear him coughing all night long

Leonard Cohen, "Tower of Song"

Too many in this one to just post an excerpt:

Gas Giants, "I Hope My Kids Like Marilyn Manson"

I'm positive that if this were a contest, mentions of Bing Crosby would win hands down. I listen to a lot of old standards and big band era stuff, and Bing gets name-checked in almost half the songs from that period (often as "Der Bingle"). It's absolutely astounding to think of what a huge star he must have been.

Charlie Daniels Band - The South's Gonna Do It Again:

Well, the train to Grinder's Switch is runnin' right on time
And the Tucker Boys are cookin' down in Caroline
People down in Florida can't be still
When ol' Lynyrd Skynyrd's pickin' down in Jacksonville
People down in Georgia come from near and far
To hear Richard Betts pickin' on that red guitar

Chorus:
So gather 'round, gather 'round children
Get down, well just get down children
Get loud, well you can be loud and be proud
Well you can be proud, hear now
Be proud you're a rebel
'Cause the South's gonna do it again and again

Elvin Bishop sittin' on a bale of hay
He ain't good lookin', but he sure can play
And there's ZZ Top and you can't forget
That old brother Willie's gettin' soakin' Wet
And all the good people down in Tennessee
Are diggin' Barefoot Jerry and the C.D.B.

Molly Hatchet - Gator Country:

I've been to Alabama, people ain't a whole lot to see;
Skynyrd says it's a real sweet home but it ain't nothing to me.
Charlie Daniels will tell you the good Lord lives in Tennessee, ha!
But I'm going back to gator country where the wine and the women are free.

There's a gator in the bushes, he's calling my name,
And a saying come on boy, you better make it back home again.
There's many roads I've traveled but they all kind of look the same.
There's a gator in the bushes, Lord, he calling my name.

Old Richard Betts will tell ya Lord he was born a Ramblin' Man.
Well he can ramble back to Georgia but I won't give a damn.
Elvin Bishop out struttin' his stuff with little Miss Slick Titty Boom.
But I'm going back to gator country to get me some elbow room.

There's a gator in the bushes he's calling my name.
and saying come on boy, you better make it back home again.
There's many roads I've traveled but they all kinda look the same.
There's a gator in the bushes, Lord, he calling my name. Yep.

There's Marshall Tucker riding a rainbow searching for a pot of gold.
Well they can take the highway, baby, and they can take all they can hold.
The Outlaws down in Tampa town it's a mighty fine place to be.
They got green grass and they got high tides and sure looks good to me.

There's a gator in the bushes, he's calling my name.
Saying come on boy, you better make it back home again.
There's so many roads I've traveled but they all kinda look the same.
There's a gator in the bushes , Lord, he's calling my name.
