hah man, that song is pretty balls to the wall.
Definitely still has the Alice in Chains sound even without Layne. This is a good start for them, a pretty good song..though kinda long at 7 mins.

That song's really heavy. Great to hear them back!

Maybe Jerry could just join in with Brian and Roger. Alice in Queen.

Thanks for the heads up, yeah I miss Layne but this song is pretty good; if they come local I will probalby check them out.

Amazon says September 29th. New track sounds very good. Cantrell gets the most amazing guitar tones. Love hearing him play.

Consider me impressed. I didn't expect much from this, but it's surprisingly good. I might have to get this new album after all.

ALICE IN CHAINS: "Black Gives Way To Blue" -9/29/09

Alice In Chains Reunion 'Gives Way' To New Album, Tour

Armed with its first album in nearly 14 years, Alice in Chains singer-guitarist Jerry Cantrell and drummer Sean Kinney tell Billboard.com the band's new album "Black Gives Way To Blue," which is due out September 29 on Virgin/EMI, doesn't stray too far from the Seattle band's influential catalog.

"It's nice to sound like yourself," laughs Kinney. "It's not really that hard, actually. I know people are blown away that we really sound like ourselves, and I understand the apprehension, but it's not really that big a stretch to sound the way that you sound."

Adds Cantrell, "We were just hoping to make the best record we possibly could and we did that. Sean and I talk a lot about when you do a record you've been working on it a long time and you're pretty sick of it by the time somebody else hears it. You're already thinking of the next thing. And we're still listening to this. It's still like really exciting to listen to and that's really good."

The group has booked a brief European run in August with a month-long Stateside tour in September. Cantrell hints more legs are due to follow.

"We're not going to stop touring when the record comes out," Cantrell laughs. "That would be like an old pattern we're trying not to do again."

While the album's lead single hasn't been announced, new track "A Looking in View" is currently streaming on aliceinchains.com. Other new songs include "Your Decision" and "Check My Brain." Kinney says the vibe of the 11-track album, which is its first effort with new singer-guitarist William DuVall, continues in the Alice in Chains tradition of tackling different styles and sounds, from the hard rock nature of "Dirt" to the acoustic-minded "Jar of Flies."

As far as the recording of a new album, the band's first since its 1995 self-titled effort and the 2002 death of original singer Layne Staley due to a heroin/cocaine overdose, nothing was for certain when the band members reunited in 2006.

"It's been a really slow process," Kinney says. "As long as it felt genuine and it came from the right place, and we all were cool with it, then we'd take another little step. Two years ago we really weren't talking about doing a record. We were on tour and we've been playing and jelling together and Will (DuVall) was getting incorporated into how things are going down. But we always had a jam space backstage where riffs and stuff started happening."

Finally, both Alice in Chains members said the spirit of Staley remains with the band. In fact, without going into specifics, there apparently is material on "Black Gives Way To Blue" that deals with their former singer.

"He's always a part of my everyday life," Kinney says. "There's not a day that goes by that I don't think of him. And there's a lot to address, with all of that stuff coming to the forefront. A lot has happened since 1995, a lot has happened in our lives and we've never talked about it or discussed it publicly. So some of that is what's addressed here. That's the way we operate, it's about what really happened in life. We're not really the fast cars and chicks songs. It's basically what's happened in life, but a lot has happened since the last record. And it's on this record."

I am loving this song more and more every time I hear it. Can't wait to get my grubby paws on the whole album.
The video for it is up on the website also now. Just be warned it is NSFW.

Although I haven't heard it yet, I am weary of this. However, I will keep an open mind (I can't stream music in the office) and give it a try.

I don't think they should be called Alice In Chains any more, but that is me. Paul Rogers + Queen works since they are not trying to be Queen in the classic sense.

They should have called the band by another same, it isn't the same without Layne in the band no matter how much Cantrell wants it to be.

Looks like they're touring!

I just saw a date for the Paradise in Boston (600 person club).

A search on Pollstar also shows dates in NY, D.C., Philly, Toronto, Cleveland, Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and S.F.

Alice In Chains was and will always be my favorite band out of the 90's grunge era with Soundgarden and STP being a tie for a distant second, this is coming from an 80's Hair Metal guy "which i still am by the way", anyway i listened to the YouTube clip and was pretty impressed, to me this sounds like classic AIC, can't wait to hear the rest of the album. R.I.P. Layne...

Who is the lead singer for the new AIC, and is he any good?

Could they pull this off with someone new?

I'm still afraid to listen after loving Alice for so long.

Everybody knows that, but it's still the same sound. Cantrell did a good portion of the vocals before, and is still doing them now, and DuVall is a worthy replacement for Layne.

Is it the exact same? No, obviously not. But is it still that AIC sound? Yes.

William Duvall and he's solid. They have been pulling this off now for the last year or two on tours which they paid tribute to Layne. They're still rocking hard and its the same sound.

Their new single "Check My Brain" has hit the airwaves. It's ok, but I much prefer "A Looking In View".

I heard the entire album and it's pretty good. Nothing really jumped out at me as an amazing single but it's a pretty tight collective effort. I've seen the reformed band twice so far and am looking forward to making it a trifecta.

If anyone cares, I interviewed Jerry and Sean a few weeks ago. My article is here.

I'm really liking what I've heard so far. Glad Cantrell decided to move forward with this, although I really enjoyed his solo records as well.

Listened to it this morning. It's an excellent album, although it could probably have been another Cantrell solo album.

Re: ALICE IN CHAINS: "Black Gives Way To Blue" -9/29/09

Alice In Chains Are Back In 'Black'

n the midst of its first reunion tour in the summer of 2006, veteran hard rock act Alice in Chains played to a crowd of 30,000 at Portugal's Super Bock Super Rock festival. As the band performed a set of its classic cuts, a handful of fans unfurled a 25-foot-long sign that read, "Alice in Chains Get Born Again."

With the Sept. 29 release of "Black Gives Way to Blue," Alice in Chains' first full-length in nearly 14 years, the band's reincarnation reaches its conclusion. The band says "Blue" serves as both a synthesis of past achievements and a tribute to lead singer Layne Staley, who died in 2002 of a drug overdose, and fans are greeting it with open arms. The Elton John-assisted title track and the lead single, "Check My Brain," is No. 1 on Billboard's Rock Songs chart.

"There's a lot of personal stuff here that we're making public," drummer Sean Kinney says. "But I'm proud of everything we've done. We've grown as individuals and as a collective."

Following the chart-topping release of its self-titled third album in 1996, the band stopped touring and went on an indefinite hiatus. The first hint of a reunion came in 2005, when Kinney, guitarist Jerry Cantrell and bassist Mike Inez performed together at a Seattle benefit concert for South Asian tsunami victims. The members started jamming and soon recruited their longtime friend, Comes With the Fall frontman William DuVall, to share vocals with Cantrell.

After the band played European festivals and select U.S. club dates in 2006, it faced a decision the following year: whether to record new material. "There was never an intention to do these shows and then make another record, but they kept feeling stronger about it," manager Susan Silver says. "At the end of 2007, Jerry dug deeper than I've ever seen him dig and wrote many of the songs, and in 2008, they decided it was time to lay them down."

Recorded at the Foo Fighters' Studio 606 in Los Angeles, "Blue" is Alice in Chains' first release on Virgin/EMI, which signed the band this spring.

As the band gears up for a European tour in November and a U.S. trek in early 2010, Kinney has no reservations about making the album and plans to keep recording with the band's current lineup. "It'd be a disservice to Layne's legacy to not keep moving forward with this project," he says. "You hope it strikes a chord, but to me, this record's already a success."

Holy shit!! This thing is good. It sounds like AIC never left. Cantrell is a fucking genius for pulling this off.

New album is pretty darn good. If you like AIC's previous albums, you're sure to like this. If you didn't like them before, you're not going to like them now. I know that Jerry was always involved in the vocals before. But, he really seems to be taking more of a primary role with them on this new album.

I feel like it's 1992 again! Last week, I bought Pearl Jam's new album. This week, it's Alice In Chains.

Obtained this last night. Pretty solid release. I need to give it many more spins before it fully sinks in, but so far so good. Made me want to revisit the AIC catalog, of which I realized I only own 2 albums. Gonna have to fix that later.

Bought this album about a month ago. I was never a big AIC fan...at all but I did have a respect for them.

This album though, is f'n great - shocked the shit out of me as I only bought because I'm literally starving for some good music. It took forever for it to grow on me and I was starting to think during my first couple of listens that I wasn't into it as much as I thought.....but then it just got better and better with each listen.

Tracks that I just can't get into:

Acid Bubble - know a lot of you prob love this tune but for me, it just takes too long to get going and it draaaags on much too long.

Take her out - the song I skip the most, really don't like this one.

Private hell - another dud but I listen to it sometimes.

Other than that I pretty much love every other song with Lesson Learned being my current fav - 8 great songs will last me a while; I have found a way over the years - it's tough but I've found a way.
