Re: Muse - The Resistance - 9/14/2009

I'm sorry to say it but I really dislike this song (at the moment anyways) This is the direction I was afraid Muse was going to go into. This overly orchestral operatic prog rock kinda deal. I am definitely more of a fan of the 1st 2 albums Showbiz and Origins than Absolution and Black Holes. So I like the more balls to the wall guitar songs I guess. I like the kinda eastern guitar break melody they got goin on here, but the lyrics and vocal melody to me I find kinda forced. I am sure I am the only one that feels this way and I am a huge Muse fan, just hoping this album isn't all over the place with a wtf reaction.

Re: Muse - The Resistance - 9/14/2009

Anyone here "The Uprising" yet, just listened to it on Rhapsody.
Can also be heard here.
I think I like it better than Eurasia...but this song sounds kinda like Blondie.
It's pretty good and all, but still not blowing me away. It's totally a catchy radio single though.

I love the new song Uprising, but I am always willing to go with whatever direction Muse takes.

It's available for .99 cents on Amazon. ($1.29 on iTunes).

Holy shit, that song is smokin! I can't wait to see them live again. Just sucks that they are opening for U2. Only because of their limited time on stage.

Uprising is free to download right now from Rhapsody's MP3 store if you don't already have it.

I'm geeked for this. Wonder if the CD/DVD will be worth the extra cash. They rarely are.

The one that came with Black Holes and Revelations was. It was a full length concert from 2004. Glastonbury I think.

Re: Muse - The Resistance - 9/14/2009

The bonus disc for HAARP was and still is my all time favorite live concert performance. To this day, when company comes over and interested in my musical tastes, I pop in that DVD and play "New Born"....it blows them away at Matt's skill and talent as a performer. Man, I wish they would've included "Plug in Baby" on the HAARP audio disc.

The disc for the new record appears to be a 43 minute doc on the "making of" The Resistance...not nearly as exciting but hey, it's freakin' MUSE !!!

Re: Muse - The Resistance - 9/14/2009

The regular version popped up in my Amazon Goldbox today for $9.49. I will likely go ahead and pre-order it for this price but was wondering if anyone has heard any specials or prices for this yet?

The making of disc doesn't really interest me and doesn't seem worth the extra 8 to 9 bucks.

Don't care too much for the single I've been hearing, but then I didn't care for the first single off the last album either.

Re: Muse - The Resistance - 9/14/2009

iTunes has 30 second clips of every track on the new album. It's difficult to get a sense of the whole album by 30 second clips, but it sounds pretty good to me. Sounds pretty ambitious, and many tracks sound like they are guitar based.

I'd digging The Uprising. Really dislike United States. I'm one part excited, one part aprehensive for the new album. United States worries me. I do not want to listen to an album of that. But I like all of the other albums, so ... I should probably have a bit more faith.

Just got done listening to the 30 second preview of each song on iTunes and I really liked what I heard. Not sure I get though the theme of the last three songs. Sounds like it could be artsy overkill.

Re: Muse - The Resistance - 9/14/2009

The album is a mixed bag. The best way to describe it is that they made an album if each song had similar musical stylings to Butterflies and Hurricanes. Some people will love this album, others will be on the fence.

I like a majority of the tracks, but I think it may be one of Muse's weakest efforts as it loses a lot of steam as it heads towards the finish line. Some may disagree with me, but after Black Holes and Revelations, I was expecting more.

Re: Muse - The Resistance - 9/14/2009

Yeah, mixed bag about says it. I agree that the first two tracks are solid. I really dislike the United States of Eurasia though. Exogenesis is good. Some of the middle tracks have yet to make a strong impression in either direction for me.

All told, I'm not thrilled. Put simply, Muse has always been a great guitar band. Matt Bellamy is arguably one of the greatest guitarists of his generation. So where's the guitar? Where are the hooks?

I'm not saying they have to remake Origin of Symmetry, but there's a little something called playing to your strength.

Re: Muse - The Resistance - 9/14/2009

You know there used to be a time where I could put Muse on a mix cd and give it to a chick and get laid, now I would be embarrassed to even suggest this to anyone. That was before they were known in the states and their music started to go downhill after Absolution. I don't know what caused them to make an album that is so shitty, I partially blame the fame that they got in America that gave them a bloated enough ego to think this was good. Do you remember when Muse made fun songs that had riffage to them and holy shit moments?. Now it's like every song has a sense of urgency to it with bad ideas mixed in, like a military funeral and someone brought balloons.

"Undisclosed Desires"...really? They pushed my limits with supermassive black hole, but this is not even catchy, it's just bad. Really bad drums and cheesy synth line, bad production blah.

"Guiding Light" is just way too much, the only redeeming factor was the 80's ripoff solo.

"Unnatural Selection" oh yay, finally a guitar riff, but oh wait the song is forgetful and mediocre..

The orchestra tracks are pretty good I suppose, but by the time I had to sit through the other annoyingly bad previous songs I don't think I appreciated them as much. I gotta start with a fresh listen on those.

I get it, it's supposed to be a conceptual rock opera whatever, but they didn't pull it off in the holy shit Muse way that it should be. Bellamy's vocals are also more upfront, drier, and the songs seemed to be more based on vocals and bad lyrics than the music. Before he used his voice I think as more as an instrument that blended with the music, now their songs sound more like standardrized pop songs with a lot of fluff. The mix also seems thinner to me than previous albums.

"Uprising" I think is the strongest track, and that is pretty sad.

that's all for now

Re: Muse - The Resistance - 9/14/2009

1) Origin Of Symmetry
2) Black Holes and Revelations
3) Absolution
-- If Hullabaloo was officially apart of their discography, it would sit here. --
4) Showbiz
5) The Resistance

I will go on the record and say this is Muse's weakest album yet. There's not a single track on here that's memorable like New Born, Bliss, Micro Cuts, Apocalypse Please, Time Is Running Out, Sing For Absolution, Stockholm Syndrome, Blackout, Butterflies and Hurricanes, Take a Bow, Starlight, Assasain, Knights of Cydonia, etc. You get the idea.

I disagree on your thoughts of Undisclosed Desires, but I agree that Uprising is the album's strongest track despite the fact I feel it's about to turn into a cover of the Doctor Who theme song any moment. I also really dig Resistance, but the entire album has me walking away that it was just a failed attempt and that Muse didn't go all out. The whole thing feels like a cop-out as I wanted something more aggressive.

Exogenesis: Symphony, Parts 1 - 3 are a great idea in theory; very lackluster in execution.
