Re: "Favorite" Artist Tournament: Opening Round/Group #3

Wow, a whole lot of nothing for me...except for

Matchup #2: Lucinda Williams
Matchup #2: Roxy Music
Matchup #3: N.W.A.
Matchup #3: INXS
Matchup #4: Simon & Garfunkel
Matchup #4: Helloween

I really like both Lucinda Williams and Roxy Music, but I think Roxy blazed more new ground and offer more diversity of styles. Of the choices, I like INXS more than NWA but I'm not a huge fan of either.
Everything else is an abstain.

Re: "Favorite" Artist Tournament: Opening Round/Group #3

Only placed two votes:

Helloween - I nominated them. And chose my username after two of their albums.

Offspring - I like their early stuff through Smash and I can't stand Jay Z.

I didn't vote for Green Day but I do like some of their stuff. It's very hit and miss. The earlier stuff is better, the more recent stuff comes off as a little self-absorbed to me.

Re: "Favorite" Artist Tournament: Opening Round/Group #3

I can't believe that many people here like Simon & Garfunkel. While I can appreciate their artistry (especially that of Paul Simon), I can't stand their music. Too soft, too sappy, and it just does not strike a chord with me at all.

To each his or her own, though. I guess when it comes to getting mellow I just follow Ted Nugent's advice.... (Double Live Gonzo reference, for those who didn't get it.)

Hard choice between Helloween and Simon and Garfunkel, since its more or less the same act.

Well, while I can't understand the appeal of Simon and Garfunkel to anyone under 50 I can give a few examples of what I love about Helloween...

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ct7Mp6k39-k&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ct7Mp6k39-k&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/c1KfDkPmB-8&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/c1KfDkPmB-8&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/utkNuTXK97g&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/utkNuTXK97g&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I just love their later stuff with Andi Deris on lead vocals. The dynamic of the band changed significantly and the band developed a really strong melodic sense while still playing powerful, aggressive, hard edged music. That's my kind of stuff. But that's just me - clearly these guys are getting their heads handed to them in the poll.

Like I said, I can't understand the appeal of that kind of music to anyone under 50 - no matter how well done (and that is a brilliantly written and meticulously well sung song). It just doesn't do anything for me, despite the insidiously catchy melody and dark, haunting atmosphere.

I'm not saying for a second that they aren't good, or that if someone else likes them that there's something wrong with them - I'm just saying that I don't get it. I'm never in the mood for something that mellow. I've always heard Simon and Garfunkel and thought that musically it was aimed at middle aged housewives of the late 60's and early 70's. Lyrically they may have been more subversive than that, but musically that's the way they struck me from the time I first heard them 35 years ago.

Out of curiosity and with all due respect, do you like anything that doesn't fall into the hard rock/heavy metal category? I've never heard you mentioning liking any artist who doesn't fall under that umbrella, which of course S&G certainly don't. I do know several metalheads who outright dismiss all music that you can't get whiplash to, saying that U2, REM and Pink Floyd (amongst others) are crap simply because you may actually have to focus more on the lyrics instead of being something you crank up and headbang to.

I grew up listening to Jazz, and I still love it. I had the good fortune of seeing many Jazz legends live in the 70's and early 80's (Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton, Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, etc). Jazz is cool and I'll always dig it. (With the exception of that, "Smooth Jazz," and that Kenny G type crap - ugh!)

It's not about having to, "Focus more on the lyrics," that turns me off from Pink Floyd or R.E.M. (since you brought them up) - it's about music that moves me. Music that I can feel, music that resonates with me. Their music doesn't move me or resonate with me, although I respect both of those bands (and U2) a lot. They're great at what they do.

The music that Simon and Garfunkel (and anyone of that ilk) plays just doesn't move me, either. I don't feel it. I find it to be boring. It doesn't have the coolness of Jazz or the energy of Rock. To me it's just kind of, "Blah." Like I said, music for middle aged housewives of the late 60's and early 70's - totally non offensive (and I'm not talking lyrically), completely safe, mellow, background music.

That doesn't mean that I don't recognize the artistry or the talent involved - I do, very much. I have a lot of respect for Paul Simon as a songwriter, I'm just not a fan.

Tori was a no-brainer for me, as was S&G and Allison Krauss.

Out of the six of us that voted for Manu Chao, how many actually like him? I'm guessing he got at least two votes from Green Day haters.

(I don't count myself among them).

I wouldnt say these are the best examples.... but I love Helloween and think they are a band that deserves way more credit. Dream Theatre fans owe a lot to Helloween and there live show is awesome (very much like a stripped down Iron Maiden show)

I'm a little surprised Offspring is crushing Jay-Z, but I imagine this forum is fairly low as far as fans of rap.

Jay-Z's not even a great rapper, but he has more songs I like than Offspring.
