Re: What are some hauntingly beautiful male vocals?
Evidently, I'm not on the same page as some other people for what makes beautiful vocals.
I mean, I like Tom Waits and Jim Morrison, but they're guys who get good performances out of second-rate equipment. If you nailed some strings to a 2x4 and gave it to Steve Vai, he would get the best possible sound out of it, but it would not be beautiful like a top-end Gibson acoustic guitar.

The rougher voices, to me, seem more truthful. Not sure why. I guess it's something like "why would this guy bother singing with that voice unless he was communicating the gospel truth?" Which is BS, of course, especially with Waits's theatrical albums, but there's something to that perception.
Funny thing is, I have a completely opposite view when it comes to visual arts. Go figure.

Waits just putting everything he has into it on 'Heart attack & Vine'; on 'Ruby's Arms', 'On the Nickel', 'Jersey Girl' , 'Saving All My Love For You'.
If someone can't hear what's going on here, man you're hurting.

"Man, you let me down again." Awesome.
I was thinking when I first posted Waits of "Ruby's Arms," specifically "Jesus Christ, this goddamn rain/Will someone put me on a train/I'll never kiss your lips again/Or break your heart." You can't tell very easily that he actually says "break your heart," which fits the mood perfectly.

Just listened to it for the first time in a while:
Townes Van Zandt, "Poncho and Lefty"
There's something disturbingly deadpan about his voice, even while the lyrics and construction convey ultimate sadness.

Thumbs up to the two who said Roy Orbison. I have a feeling that if more people had exposure to his work, he'd be on a lot more lists here, because he is the standard.

Re: What are some hauntingly beautiful male vocals?
Rick Danko and Richard Manuel of the Band were both extremely emotive singers.
Here's proof

Re: What are some hauntingly beautiful male vocals?
I don't think Greg Brown or John Gorka have been mentioned ... deep modern folk baritones. Greg Brown's song "Slow Dark Movie" is great place to start for him, and John Gorka's song "Bigtime Lonesome."
Others:
Bono (first 5 U2 records)
Jeff Buckley
Stevie Wonder
Gary Louris/Mark Olson
Richard Buckner
Sam Beam (love his hushed vocal style, close on the mic and turned way up)
Freddie Mercury
Chris Martin
Liam O'Maonlai of the Hothouse Flowers
Luka Bloom
Ben Kyle of Romantica (look em up!)
Buddy Miller

I've got a lot of his stuff, and have to agree. Listen to "Dream" or "Running Scared" to get some chills going up your spine...

Quite a few people I know are of the same opinion. However he is highly rated by many including some very good and famous singers. Just goes to show we all hear things differently.

Agreed!, particularly "Blackout" from Absolution. I'd also throw in Thom Yorke from Radiohead. Their voices are sooo similar as well.
