from pitchfork:

The Flaming Lips to Drop Double LP

While we eagerly anticipate the Flaming Lips' headlining set at this year's Pitchfork Music Festival-- which will include fan requests!-- the guys are wrapping up their brand new album. It might be called Embryonic, according to a Stereogum report. And now Billboard tells us that the late summer release will be the Oklahoma band's first double LP.

"Our past couple of records we've always had this little dilemma, like how many songs do you put on? How many instruments do you put on? What's the focus? And some of my favorite records-- thinking Beatles White Album, Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti and even some of the longer things that the Clash have done-- part of the reason I like them is that they're not focused. They're kind of like a free-for-all and go everywhere." Wayne Coyne told Billboard, before expounding on the record's "freak-out" vibe.

Song titles include "Convinced of the Hex" and "I Don't Understand Karma".

______________

Not a fan of their last LP but I always look forward to some new Lips. Hope this one is as weird as it sounds.

As long as it's better than their last album.

Edit: By that I meant At War with the Mystics. I haven't heard the Christmas on Mars soundtrack yet.

But how was the soundtrack?

Anyone heard the Lips cover of Madonna's Borderline?

I love The Flaming Lips, and always buy their albums during release week, but I do hate having to re-buy everything once they release it in 5.1. Always worth it, but it's just a little kick in the ass that I always know is coming.

Re: The Flaming Lips: Embryonic (Double LP) - Late Summer 2009

I thought AWWTM was a great album, still listen to it a few times a year (not as much as Yoshimi, SB or CTM though).

The Lips cover of borderline is epic. Stats off slow and melodic, Wayne put all his effort into the vocals and the end just explodes.

And just to continue my fanboy rant, Christmas on Mars was really weird but good at the same time. It shows the passion of everybody involved in making it come to reality and it just feels like it fits in with the band.

Re: The Flaming Lips: Embryonic (Double LP) - Late Summer 2009

At War with the Mystics was OK at best IMO.

My main issue with it is there really is no coherence between the more serious stuff like Vein of Stars and Sound of Failure and the goofy stuff like Free Radicals and Haven't Got a Clue.

Plus it's mastered pretty poorly with tons of compression.

Let's hope this one gets back to the brilliance of Yoshimi and Soft Bulletin.

I've tried to like this band and I actually like much of their music, but I just can't take the singer. His has a very thin voice and can't hit the high notes that he often tries to hit. It's almost painful to hear his voice strain when trying.

I also love when they cover Can't Get You Out of My Head live.

I've been listening to the Lips since 1986 and think Mystics and Yoshimi are right at the top of all the material they've released. I love the direction they are going.

I'm a long time fan as well. I really enjoyed the direction they were taking up through Yoshimi but I though Mystics was a misstep. Some great songs but the album didn't mesh for me.

I loved Yoshimi and I have every Lips album. AWWTM just didn't do it for me.

Re: The Flaming Lips: Embryonic (Double LP) - Late Summer 2009

Having now heard four tracks from the album (Convinced of the Hex, The Impulse, Silver Trembling Hands, and See the Leaves), I am really looking forward to this record. It's probably just my Joy Division worship, but I'm really digging the post-punk vibe given off by some of these songs.

Re: The Flaming Lips: Embryonic (Double LP) - Late Summer 2009

Went to BB today, and got very confused about this. The standard release is only a single disc, although the CD has been promoted for months as a double CD release. On top of that, BB advertised a limited edition 2 CD/1 DVD set of the album for $16.99, which my store did not have. The worker looked up the details of the limited set for me, and the track list was exactly the same, only spread across two discs. The DVD is apparently only a high-quality audio version of the album. Why spread it across two discs for one release, and contain to a single disc for another??

It is confusing. Also the DVD is hi-res stereo, not 5.1. I guess that'll be released in the near future, hopefully.

So, this is not a 2 disc release?

It is a 2 LP release. The deluxe CD version divides the album between 2 CDs to simulate the LP experience. The regular CD version has the whole album on 1 disc.
