I'm not crazy about this album, either. I feel like the Flaming Lips have really lost their sense of purpose and direction. Here's hoping they can pull themselves out of the mire.

I think their purpose has become their live shows.

I picked up the limited edition today at Best Buy. Still haven't listened to it yet...

Certainly possible. I've seen them live five times and they never cease to amaze.

Actually, went for the single disc at $7.99. If I go deluxe, it'll be for the 5.1 mix in the future. Only listened to the first few songs but I'm really digging it.

They are a great band live but they spend way too much time setting up their gags and don't play enough songs.

I listened to the album today... absolutely amazing. I can't see how any Flaming Lips fan couldn't enjoy this - it's experimental in all the right ways. I'm hoping to give it another spin later tonight.

I love this album. I think it is my favorite since "In A Priest Driven Ambulance". I even like it more than "The Soft Bulletin".

They were fantastic on Conan last night:

I love the album, too. It's up there with Animal Collective/Grizzly Bear/Dirty Projectors for me this year. The new Fuck Buttons album is working its way up to there, too.

I don't like it as much as The Soft Bulletin, but I think it edges Yoshimi out for second for me.

That was an incredible performance on Conan! Man, I have got to see them live in concert at some point in my life. I still haven't.

Again, wow, that was really awesome!

Nice, good to see Steven looking healthy.

I listened to it once and while it's a lot to digest I think it's pretty safe to say that I like it better than AWWTM.

The second half seemed stronger than the first too. I'm looking forward to spinning it again today.

They are an amazing live act. I saw them at the UFOs at the Zoo OKC show and it was spectacular.

I've seen them in venues as small as The Knitting Factory and as large as Coachella. They always put on a great show and I catch them every time they're in town.

Re: The Flaming Lips: Embryonic (Double LP) - Late Summer 2009

I've listened to the album more today, and I can say with no hesitation it is the best album of the year for me so far. None of my other favorite musicians have released something as great as this so far this year. It's phenomenal... with every listen I'm just loving it more. It's a grower, and it started off great so that's saying something.

Re: The Flaming Lips: Embryonic (Double LP) - Late Summer 2009

I read on Allmusic.com this morning that the band is planning to cover all of Dark Side of the Moon (?!):

The Flaming Lips have announced plans to cover the entirety of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. The album, which is currently slated to hit iTunes long before it shows up in physical stores, will feature guest appearances by Peaches, Henry Rollins, and Stardeath and White Dwarves (featuring Wayne Coyne's nephew).[Spinner.com]

Hmm. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

I love the Flaming Lips, and Dark Side of the Moon is, for me, as close as any album has come to perfection, but I'm not sure I'm too hot on the idea of them tinkering with it. And Henry Rollins? Really?

Sounds like an interesting idea though.

Sure does. It won't match Dark Side of the Moon itself, obviously, but it may be a cool record to hear. I'd download it.

Apparently it will be an iTunes exclusive.

This album is pretty amazing IMO. Check them out on Morning Becomes Eclectic from last Friday.

I don't feel like making a separate thread for this, so I'll just put it here. The Lips are doing their third annual New Year's Eve Freakout in Oklahoma City this year, and as an added bonus, at midnight, after their regular set, they'll be performing Dark Side of the Moon in it's entirety. Awesome.

Their cover of Dark Side is out. I downloaded it from iTunes last night and have been listening to it all morning.

So far, I like it quite a bit.
