Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

My copy of REMTV arrived this past week. Watching the Storytellers episode now. Good stuff. I like this set a lot, even if it is the first (non-David Bowie) DVD I've bought in a couple of years. Thanks for the heads-up, cdollaz.

I thought it was discussed up thread but I can't find it : does this big set duplicate any of the other REM DVDs? I'm still collecting those but they're getting hard to find.

Now, Disc 5 is particularly weird since it's basically three copies of the same show. It's from the same tour that Live in Austin Texas was filmed. I certainly don't think you need to pick up that DVD of you get this set.

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

I'll have to sit down and compare the other DVDs to be sure but I'll still be glad to have this set.

EDIT: It came yesterday (the 4th), I was out late and didn't get to open it until late last night. The cardboard mailer was dinged up pretty bad, but the set itself was untouched. Can't wait to dive in (but we're re-watching The Force Awakens tonight).

Mike Mills Reflects on R.E.M.'s 'Out of Time' Ahead of 25th-Anniversary Reissue

R.E.M. will reissue its best-selling album, 1991's Out of Time, on Nov. 18 in three different configurations to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the band's first chart-topper.

The Out of Time reissue will come in a two-CD set with the remastered version of the original album along with a bonus disc of demos recorded in preparation for Out of Time, two non-album B-sides and a previously unreleased song. This version will also be available as a three-LP vinyl set.

There will also be a deluxe edition, including four discs, adding the band's 1991 performance on Mountain Stage, a Blu-ray disc with hi-resolution audio and 5.1 Surround Sound versions of the album, all of the music videos released in conjunction with Out of Time, and the 1991 electronic press kit Time Piece, with in-studio footage and additional performances. All versions will include liner notes by Annie Zaleski with interviews with all of the band's members and Scott Litt and John Keane, who produced the album.

I'm guessing Automatic for the People will be next. Cannot fucking wait. That is their masterpiece, in my opinion. I just love that record. It never gets old.

I will buy whatever they sell of that album.

Absolutely. Such an amazing album. But I love Out Of Time as well.

I wonder how much the deluxe set will be. Also if the set will be region free and a lot cheaper imported from the UK.

I generally don't go in for things like this but I'll make an exception for Out of Time. Hopefully it stays available long enough for someone to get it for me for Christmas.

They've done a 25th anniversary edition of every album so far. Out of Time was from 1991 with Automatic For The People following quickly in 1992, so we should only have to wait till next year for the 25th anniversary edition set of it.

I'm hoping for a disc of demos and the complete set from the 40 Watt Club performance from November 1992. It was spread out across the Monster CD singles but was missing a couple of songs and the band chatter bits between the tracks. This was another album they didn't tour for so there aren't many concert-length performances available and this is a good one. Another blu-ray would also be welcome.

I'm just hoping they've managed to find better copies of the videos but am pretty sure they'll end up just being up-converted SD given when they were made.

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

I guess all people who get old say this, but I really can't believe it's been 25 years since this came out. This was the album for my freshman year at college even though it was released when I was finishing high school, so it has a lot of sentimental importance to me.

I agree, though, while R.E.M. has a lot of great albums, Automatic For The People is my favorite and I'm excited it will be out next year.

I'll probably have to grab the deluxe version of this because I want the live cd. Just hope it comes down a bit in price, but if I have to pay $60 for this, I will.

R.E.M. will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Automatic for the People with a deluxe reissue of the album that found the band at the height of its commercial and critical success. It's due in three different configurations on Nov. 10 from Concord's reissue imprint, Craft Recordings, including a Deluxe Anniversary Edition that will feature the album remixed in Dolby Atmos.
The set will also include 20 previously unreleased demos from the album's recording sessions, including "Mike's Pop Song," which is now available to stream on Spotify, Apple Music and Google Play and for purchase at Amazon and iTunes. The second disc of the two-disc 25th Anniversary and Deluxe Edition is the concert recording, "Live at the 40 Watt Club 11/19/92," which captures the band in its hometown of Athens, Ga. at a benefit concert for Alternative NRG/Greenpeace, playing its only show that year. Also included with the Deluxe Edition, packaged in a 12-by-12-inch lift-top box, is a 60-page book featuring never released photos by Anton Corbijn and Melodie McDaniel, and new liner notes by music journalist Tom Doyle. I am so looking forward for this one. The 40 watt club concert was a great "unofficial" release back in the day. Can't wait!

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

I really need to decide if the demos are worth getting the box, which won't fit at all with all the other R.E.M. Anniversary releases. I definitely don't need the bd.

This came out my sophomore year in college and along with the Tori Amos album "Little Earthquakes" kind of helped shape my musical interests as an adult so they're still incredibly influential to me.

I can't possibly say which R.E.M. album is the best one, but AFTP is the most important one to me so I'm really psyched to get this.

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

R.E.M. at the BBC Coming October 19th

R.E.M. grew up with the BBC, and this historic relationship is lovingly celebrated across an incredible collection that beautifully illustrates the career trajectory of one of modern music’s greatest bands. The collection—available as a super-deluxe edition 8-CD/1-DVD box set, as well as 2-CD, 2-LP and digital formats—comprises a treasure trove of rare and unreleased live and studio recordings culled from the BBC and band archives. This is a must-have collection for R.E.M. fans and an authoritative introduction for newcomers.

In-studio performances featured in the 8-CD/1-DVD box set include a John Peel Session (1998), Drivetime and Mark and Lard appearances (2003) and a glorious Radio 1 Live Lounge performance (2008). Live broadcasts include a rough-and-tumble show from Nottingham’s Rock City (1984), the stunning 1995 Milton Keynes Monster Tour (their first after a six-year break), a blistering 1999 Glastonbury headline set and an invitation-only 2004 show at London’s St James’s Church.

The DVD kicks off with a sixty-minute intimate retrospective of the band’s legendary performances at the BBC in the Accelerating Backwards film – previously broadcast only in the UK and available commercially for the first time here. Accelerating Backwards also includes revealing interviews with Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe, further testifying to R.E.M.’s long, special relationship with the BBC. The DVD also offers a complete 1998 Later….With Jools Holland episode uniquely dedicated to the band, plus TV appearances on Top of the Pops and more.

The package liner notes add yet more behind-the-scenes insight to this definitive retrospective collection. Assorted BBC personalities reminiscence about what it was like to work with R.E.M both on stage and off. Respected BBC DJ/Presenter Jo Whiley recalls, “Their Glastonbury performance in 1999 was a dazzling moment: the band storming through an all-killer, no-filler setlist. As a headline performance, it was a triumph and, for me, it’s up there as one of the Glastonbury greats.” Of a 2001 Top of the Pops performance, BBC Producer Mark Hagen muses, “”Michael once told me that he hears in colors and it was one of those nights when you felt that you could reach out and touch the music as it flowed through the air, a glorious rolling cloud of green. Just like a kudzu vine in a dream.” Acclaimed rock journalist Tom Doyle also provides an overview of the entire thirty-year period.

In addition to the comprehensive box set, The Best of R.E.M. at the BBC is also available via 2-CD and 2-LP formats. The Best of collection offers a selection of in-studio performance and live broadcast highlights. R.E.M. at the BBC will also be available to stream or download, with the digital album offering mirroring discs 1 to 8 from the box set.

The first instant grat. single—a memorable version of “Losing My Religion” recorded in 1991 for BBC 1’s Into The Night session—is available when you pre-order the box set or Best of album (Listen or Pre-order Here). New instant grat. singles will be released each week leading up to street date.

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

It's weird that they say "R.E.M. grew up with the BBC" but only one of the eight CDs predates Out of Time, which marked their ascendency as one of the biggest artists in pop/rock. They were all grown up by the time they recorded those other seven CDs of material.
