Surprised no one has mentioned DJ Shadow, Smashing Pumpkins, or Nas yet

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "Zeitgeist" is the best SP album since a "Siamese Dream" or "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness"

But I suppose if someone said that "Zeitgeist" is the best album since "Machina", I *guess* they would be right since there wasn't any SP albums released (officially anyway) between them.

Slayer - Reign in Blood.

Still, over 20 years later, considered to be the high watermark for speed/thrash metal by bands not called Metallica.

Kid A is pretty monumental too though.

Really Radiohead has evolved so much that depending on your taste you could cite The Bends, OK Computer, or Kid A as their "best".

Put me down for Sea Change as Beck's best, although Odelay is a very close second and on some days I prefer it, but they're totally different too.

I dunno, I prefer BSSM myself but it seemed like everyone seemed to carry a boner over Californication

Exile and Some Girls are masterpieces though. Tattoo You, while not a masterpiece, was the last album where they seemed something other than a nostalgia touring act who throw a new album out as little more than an excuse to go on the road. So it seems like every album since that isn't totally forgettable gets compared to Tattoo, I know Voodoo Lounge and Bigger Bang both had the "best album since Tattoo You" moniker bestowed on it by fans and reviewers upon release.

Regardless of what everyone's personal favorite Beck album is, critically and commercially, I believe his peak was with Odelay!.

I picked up A Bigger Bang because of this and was terribly disappointed.

Usually the album that gets compared to is usually seen as the last album of a classic run that every album since gets held up against.

Examples:
Rolling Stones - Tattoo You
David Bowie - Scary Monsters (who infamously referred to this and said he considered releasing an album called "The Best Album Since Scary Monsters", lol)
U2 - Achtung Baby (the latter albums have gotten good reviews but they still can't seem to escape Achtung)
Prince - Sign O' The Times
REM - Automatic For The People
Depeche Mode - Violator

any others? I know there are dozens more where this comes from
Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie
