IDing a Song When You Don't Know the Words

There's a song that's in my head every so often and I can never figure out what it is. It's been off and on since I last heard it on something in the late 90s/early 00s.

I think the song is from the early 90s given the way it sounds - using some sort of electronic beat, but I have no idea if there's even words to it. Sounds like it may be on some of those mix CDs you see on TV with the late 80s/early 90s clubbish songs used in A Night at the Roxbury and stuff.

I've hummed it, tried replicating it for people, but to no avail nobody knows what the name of the song was (or even remember it). I'm sure it was some stupid one-hit wonder (maybe it wasn't even a hit - I dunno), but I can hear the first two parts of the song in my head and I need to figure out who composed it.

"Dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun - dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun DUN"

I'm guessing I'm kind of SOL. What do you do when you have a song stuck in your head and you don't know if there are any lyrics?

Oh and if anyone knows of a way for me to figure out what song it is I'm thinking of, I'd appreciate it.

Record yourself humming it and upload it somewhere. I'm sure people would be able to help you out moreso that way.

I'll take a stab given the years you guessed and the beat...

This is based on basically nothing, but I would say Sandstorm by Darude. It probably isn't it but I tried.

Sandstorm is a classic, but not it. Also not the Daft Punk song. Thanks for the help so far.

I'll try and get a recording online. It started bugging me more now that I asked online for help. I gotta figure out the song since I'd like to hear it again.

Tap the rhythm with your spacebar at this site. Maybe it can ID it.

I'm anxiously awaiting the sound clip of you humming (or doot-doot-ing) it. My fiance will be able to figure it out. She's a pro at shit like that.

Maybe it's Under Pressure, or Ice Ice Baby. It all depends on whether it's

"ding ding di di ding ding"

or

"DING ding ding di di DING ding"

It's not the same.

Haha, I'm going to upload one when I can get a hold of a mic or something. I have no way to record myself right now.

obviously, you need to rent out some time at a professional studio. This is serious business.

If you have headphones, you can plug them into the mic jack and speak into the ear piece.

Re: IDing a Song When You Don't Know the Words

Well, it took 3 and a half years, but I heard a couple of songs recently that have had to interpolate elements of the mystery tune. It's been stuck in my head for the past few weeks so I thought I'd revive this thread from the dead.

Here's me belting out the only part of the song I know (which may be the backing main beat or possibly the chorus or intro):

http://soundcloud.com/martinmcflysr/...lectronic-song

Then here are the two songs that sound like they took elements of it to some extent:

(fast forward to 0:28)
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/D-W8NTVsGWQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The Madonna song has a string rendition of it:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/NjQsMFfdohQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I think this is the best I'm going to be able to do but I hope it's enough. It'd be nice to finally solve the mystery.

Wow, it sounds kinda familiar, but I can't put my finger on it either.

But, I'll throw out a guess that's probably wrong: "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" by They Might Be Giants?

No, the song definitely has that clubby-electronic vibe. There weren't any instruments in it.
