Yes! Wow, that's definitely the song. It's not the version I heard at the time, but that's definitely the beat. The one I had heard on the radio that day must've been a cover or something. At least I can narrow down the search.

Man, over a decade it's been bugging me and the search is almost over. Thanks, guys!

I like your version better than the Yazoo version. Any chance you can hum the whole song?

Yours is more forlorn and from the heart. Kinda like a wistful, unplugged approach.

As someone who has heard this song at least three or four times a week for the last 30 years (I listen to a lot of '80s music), it boggles my mind that someone wouldn't know it immediately. Damn whippersnappers.

There's a few different versions on Spotify. Check them out and see if any of them match what you remember.

Shit, I even have this song on my computer! Can't believe I didn't get it! Glad I can stop wondering along with the OP what it was though.

Wonderful result! And that song is a staple with me too, since I'd hear it quite often in the house over the years. And now I know the name of it.

I was more concerned with how McFly's recorded voice sounds just like my recorded voice which I find impossibly strange.
