I know you already mentioned having checked out Bob, but most people just check out "Legend", which is solid, but barely even scratches the surface of the music he created. So, I know he's a usual suspect, but I highly recommend the Songs of Freedom box set.

I have Legend (of course) but i also have Uprising, Natty Dread, and Kaya. To be honest, I think Kaya is my favorite of his non-greatest hits albums.

I tend to listen to Peter Tosh a good deal more than Bob Marley. I'm not really sure but i liked his sound a little better.

Of the Marley kids i have really only listened to Ky-Mani Marley much. I dug his record. Damian i think i heard a couple times but thought he seemed a good deal more hip-hop than reggae. I don't know if i have ever listened to more than a song or two by Ziggy.

Glad to see you have some of his catalog titles. His album Survival pretty much got me through my entire freshman year of college and I have a lot of love for Catch a Fire. And not to beat a dead horse, but I love how Songs of Freedom box disc 1 covers all of his highly underrated early stuff.

Of the kids, I've probably listened to Ziggy the most, he's got some really good stuff and heard a bit of Damian.

Also, for more suggestions, definitely check out

the title is misleading as it looks like one of his albums, but it's actually a great compilation of raggae artists.

Just FYI, there is a hell of a lot of great Reggae on eMusic.com, including many of the albums listed in this thread. You should check it out, you can save a lot of money over the Amazon store, which means more great music to listen to.

Be sure to check out the Blood & Fire label, also on eMusic.

Re: Recommend me some reggae

I think people already have you covered on the classics...one I think they missed is Barrington Levy. And I think someone mentioned Buju Banton...if not, there ya go

So I'll try to help you out with newer music.......

some of the more popular names you should check out are:
Beenie Man
Elephant Man
Sizzla...my fav out of the big names
...if you want to stick with the Marley's I would check out either Damian or Stephen before anyone else.

let's see...(thinking while typing...lol)
Capelton
Jah Cure
Tanya Stephens...don't think we've had any females yet
Patrice....some really nice African-German reggae and his wife(?) Ayo who is more soul/folk/reggae

For some compilations to get a feel for a lot of the newer artists check out the Reggae Hits CDs, they're a great place to start.

For something familiar but different check the Easy Star All Stars who have remade Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" (Dub Side of the Moon) and Radiohead's "Kid A" (Radiodread)...

And I saved my personal best for last....These 2 guys I recommend before all the others:

I-Wayne
Richie Spice...you're missing out on modern reggae until you hear this guy...in one word "Brilliant"

If you're interested and need some albums or song recommendations let me know and I'll go through my iTunes. I could even point you out to some friends of mine who are working their asses off on their music if you want to hear something new and relatively unheard. They're English, French and Thai so you'll be getting a totally different sound...They have some tracks on Myspace if you're on there.

edit...I don't know if it's possible to add tracks here, but if anyone knows how I could add a few choice tracks to the thread so everyone can have a listen

For a novelty reggae "band," check out The Nintendolites (there are download links on the page). It's basically reggae songs done entirely with Nintendo sounds. It's silly but good for a chuckle.

Patrice is awesome, dino88.

"Jah Jah Deh Deh" from How Do You Call It? is one of my favorite songs.
