I always thought "Because The Night" was a collaboration. I thought Patti Smith wrote the lyrics. ?

Bruce had unfinished lyrics when he handed the song of to Patti Smith, but she rewrote them heavily. Bruce continued to perform his version live.

lol, just noticed this comment. I don't dislike David Gray, but Soft Cell is much more interesting and fun than Gray. I just listened to his cover of this and it's nothing to write home about. Soft Cell wasn't a crappy band.

I had a friend who had never heard William Bell's "Forgot to be Your Lover" (easily my favorite song of all time) and had only heard the awful Billy Idol version (have mercy) and was like "this is pretty cool what this guy did with this Billy Idol song, but the Idol version is still better"

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/CqKB0h4uefs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

is a cover of this

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/7NqoV141QzQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

trying to think of some more...don't think most people know Joan Jett 'I Love Rock n Roll" is a cover

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/8AT_Pbtyid0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Re: Cover Songs You Didn't Realize Were Covers

Back when I was getting into Phish I listened to Roses Are Free all the time
<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-18cAiRCur0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Then I found out that it was originally by Ween
<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/UoAdWAb6190" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Because of that I got into Ween and my life has been all the better

Racer "Kitty" 1979 (Toni Basil changed it for "Mickey" 1982)

Labi Siffre "It Must Be Love" 1972 (Madness scored a hit with it):

The Family "Nothing Compares 2 U" 1985 (Prince recorded the track in 1984 while Purple Rain was hot and had his project The Family record it. It was not a single):

Love this one! John Kongos recorded "He's Gonna Step On You Again" in 1971 that The Happy Mondays ripped in 1990:

Re: Cover Songs You Didn't Realize Were Covers

Maybe this should be it's own thread, but how about songs that sampled older songs?

Shaggy's "Angel" samples Steve Miller Band's "The Joker"

Imani Coppola's "Legend of a Cowgirl" samples Donovan's "Sunshine Superman"

Those were two off the top of my head (and not blatant samples like Puff Daddy, Vanilla Ice, or MC Hammer)

I never realized the song One by Aimee Mann from the Magnolia soundtrack was originally a Three Dog Night song
