Metal / hard rock fans, help me out...

It's no secret that I don't like most metal. Most of it is too stupid or cheesy (radio metal, nu-metal) or the vocals are too Cookie Monster.

But... I like Entombed. Problem is, I'm not really comfortable with some of the subject matter. Now, I know I'm going to run into this with death metal, so I'm a bit lax. I just ask that it's not overtly satanic.

If it helps, I really Death From Above 1979 as well.

Opeth is technically death metal (or at least I've heard a number of arguments on the subject), but I do enjoy them quite a bit. There is a fair amount of cookie monster vocals, but it is a good mix of normal singing as well. I'd recommend "Blackwater Park" as a good starting point. "Damnation" is excellent and features an entirely different aspect of their clean vocals throughout and sounds as if it could have been released in 1977. Just good, atmospheric rock.

Damnation is a fucking great album, but starting with it will definitely give you a false perception of their style as a whole. It's very mellow and wouldn't even qualify as 'hard rock' much less metal, IMO.

Bus, do you mean Entombed like their song "Wolverine Blues?"

Carcass' last album, "Swansong," had a similar sound -- metal with a rock n' roll feel.

Hmm, have you listened to any Dan Swano? More prog-death, but the lyrics are not satanic at all. This is a great song, a little keyboard heavy, but I love the part about 4 minutes in when it mellows out and the clean singing comes in:

Great melodic death/viking metal, and the vocals don't sound too 'cookie monster' imo (god i hate that term)

Early Entombed or the later stuff?

I always liked Bolt Thrower, but the vocals might put you off.

I'm not familiar with Entombed, but below is the link to Music Map, which may give you some ideas.

http://www.music-map.com/entombed.html

You could also try Pandora, enter Entombed, and see what comes up.

Entombed is great stuff. As it happens, I am wearing my Left Hand Black shirt.

Anyway, here's other stuff I think you'll like:

In Flames - Colony, Clayman
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Thyrfing - Valdr Galga (viking metal)
Vader - Black to the Blind
Obituary - Slowly We Rot, Cause of Death (similar to Entombed, but subject may not work)
Opeth - Blackwater Park (all Opeth, really)
Amorphis - Tales From The Thousand Lakes
Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors
Death - Symbolic

also:

Borknagar - The Archaic Course, Quintessence

Obituary - "World Demise" from the album World Demise (embed disabled)

This was Obituary's best produced and most accessible album... and dare I say the heaviest. The groove that exists between the rhythm guitar (Trevor Peres) and drums (Donald Tardy) is simply incredible. Non-satanic lyrics too -- not that most of what John Tardy screams is discernible anyway.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/enV6NEPf-Fg&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/enV6NEPf-Fg&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Morgoth - "Resistance" from the album Odium

Morgoth adds an industrial flavor and breaks out of a generic death metal sound from their previous albums ("Darkness" is worth a listen from Cursed). "Drowning Sun" is a great song.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/dal6BqySSSw&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/dal6BqySSSw&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Coroner - "Serpent Moves" from the album Grin

Slower and heavier than their previous efforts. Not a fan fave but I like the direction they took with this album.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vYTMItZYV2k&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vYTMItZYV2k&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Sepultura - "We Who Are Not As Others" from the album Chaos A.D.

Another album of pure heaviness. "The Hunt" is a great cover. Not on Chaos A.D. but a brilliant Sabbath cover, "Symptom of the Universe."

they released two Obituary albums on one cd a while back. They also did this with Mercyful Fate (whom you may also like) and Gorguts (maybe)

as wishbone said, Donald Tardy on drums is awesome.

IMO Opeth is one of the best and most important metal bands of the last 10 years. Just masterpiece after masterpiece.

I'd have to say Ghost Reveries is a good starting point - it's more accessible than the others IMO, but they are all worth taking the time to absorb. The new record is awesome.

Speaking of them, as anyone else heard their cover of "Would?" yet?

Crap, imho.

Needed some growly vocals in there somewhere.

Re: Metal / hard rock fans, help me out...

I like the guitar stuff but it was a little too close to the original.

dick,

It was part of what they called the "Burden EP". It's out on iTunes. Basically a short version of "Burden", the previously unreleased "Mellotron Heart" and "Would?".

apparently my memory isn't so good:

still, I never opened the limited edition ones and since I had the CD. I didn't end up seeing any more on ebay. I thought they'd be a hot item, but no dice.

alright, I just listened to the Would? cover. I thought it was perfect. I'm glad they didn't do much to it. It was pretty perfect as is.

Opeth - Would?

I like it too -- they took a brooding song and made their cover just that little bit more brooding and heavy. Nice punctuated ending.
