Delaney Bramlett R.I.P.

Earlier this year while rummaging through a record shop in Minnesota I came across an odd album cover by a group I had never heard of before. The album cover was just a picture of a couple with the words To Bonnie from Delaney. Like a love letter or some shit. The group was Delaney and Bonnie and Friends and the album was To Bonnie from Delaney. I didn't buy it at that record shop but the album cover and title stuck with me and I decided to look them up once I got home.

I surfed on over to Amazon and I sampled some of the tracks from their greatest hits albums and I was really impressed. After reading some more about them I learned that they had toured with Clapton in the 70s and that they had inspired him to create the sound of Derek and Dominos. Noted musician and Beatle George Harrison was also a fan and Delaney had even helped George learn to love the slide guitar and sing gospel which produced My Sweet Lord from All Things Must Pass.

So after some research and sampling, I bought the albums On Tour with Eric Clapton and To Bonnie from Delaney online and lucked into finding Home at a local record shop. Those are all great albums with Home being my favorite. If I had to describe their sound it would be like a garage band fronted by Otis Redding. If you get a chance, try and check out some of their stuff.

It's these type of unknown bands who gave inspiration to the artists we've come to love and respect. So thanks Delaney for producing music from almost 40 years ago that I just lucked into finding in a record store in Minneapolis.

I wouldn't necessarily label them as unknown. At the time, mostly due to the association with Clapton, it was pretty well known who they were and the albums were common in all the record stores. "Only You Know and I Know" was a fairly successful single and got heavy AM rotation at the time. Anything Clapton did was well noticed. As well known if not more than Blind Faith among the average U.S. rock listener. Glad you got turned on to them, good stuff.

You also might remember Bonnie from that season she was on Roseanne.

Well, known by people today. I'm sure they were well known during that time period. Clapton, Harrison and the like had a lot more staying power than this band.

I'm glad I lucked into them too. Great music.

Wonderful guitar player. Though I have to admit that I haven't listened to D&B in years - this will get me to dig up my old CDs.

She also slap Elvis Costello in his face after he made a racially derogatory remark about Ray Charles.

Picked up a song today on Itunes. Thanks for bringing them up, sorry it's not under better circumstances.

RIP Delaney Bramlett

I loved Bonnie when she was on Roseanne, my thoughts and prayers are with her. Their daughter was briefly in Fleetwood Mac when Mick tried to give the band a new image in the early 90's when Lindsey and Stevie had left.

That did make me sad when I read about it the other day. I always enjoyed the Delaney & Bonnie song "Soul Shake," which has gotten play over the years on AOR FM. They also appeared in the movie "Vanishing Point."
