I listened to side A on the way home. I like it so far. Queen Of The Supermarket is an awesome song (though I nearly drove off the road when I heard Bruce drop an F bomb; is that his first one?). I like that first track, Outlaw Pete -- it's really good.

Yup Best Buy has started to sell some vinyl which amazing me. I picked up my copy from BB today because Rasputin hadn't gotten their vinyl copies in yet and weren't sure if they were getting them this week. As for the hate for this album, it's only the hardcore fans that don't like it. They don't like it because it's not dark like his older stuff, or angry like he is on Magic. They don't like it that it's Springsteen's most hopeful album in years. I don't think that they get that everyone of his albums this decade have dealt with a time and place with what has been going on in America. The Rising came right after 9/11 with it's were going to make it through this because I'm here with you feel. Magic was his Bush protest album, and the feel was that it can't get an worse than whats going on. Working on a Dream was done I think because he knew that the change was coming in America. Plus I've heard that some of the songs were carry over from Magic because they didn't fit into the feel of that album.

Listening to the new album so far, I feel a bit blah about it. There's some decent songs, but nothing really stands out to me like "Girls In Their Summer Clothes" or "Your Own Worst Enemy" did off of Magic.
Magic, which IMHO, was the best Springsteen album since Born In The USA, restored my faith in Bruce. So far though, this one's just not doing it for me. We'll have to see what more spins might do.

To answer Decker, no, this is not Bruce's first F-Bomb. From what I know, his first was on Devils and Dust's Long Time Comin' "I ain't gonna F it up this time." But just like you, I bugged out when I heard it on Queen of the Supermarket. It's almost said with glee!

That's why the reception to the new album Working on a Dream has been so mixed--this is NOT the Springsteen that the die-hard fans like. I downloaded the album from the Amazon MP3 download store and enjoyed its wide, varied music, especially now that he's got the E Street Band on this more "optimistic" album.

Your right about the wide variety. I like how the album goes directly from a lush, echoey Pet Sounds-like arrangement in This Life to a distorted lo-fi 12 bar blues in Good Eye (was that Bruce's first 12-bar song?) to a traditional bluegrass arrangement in the next song,Tomorrow Never Knows. I think the contrast makes for interesting listening.

BTW : The original post mentions a second bonus track "A Night With the Jersey Devil ". What happened to that one?

Word is that Bruce is going four songs at the Super Bowl, lasting 12 minutes. I guess that means no 'Jungleland' or 'Rosalita'! I turned down the opportunity to learn the songlist, would rather be surprised on Sunday...

This album is such a letdown for me. The Rising was awesome, Magic was good, but this one is weak. It feels like filler, for the most part. The songs are catchy, but they don't resonate, which for other bands would be okay... But for the Boss...

My take is that the album starts strong: The first four songs are as good as anything he's released lately. The last two songs, "The Last Carnival" and "The Wrestling" are also really good. There's a blah sort of sameness to everything in between.

Another solid Bruce album...very cool.
And, how awesome was the Boss last night? I am a little biased because I am a Jersey boy, but wow, seriously.

"Outlaw Pete" is an instant classic, a sweeping, majestic epic that (IMHO) ranks right below his Born to Run-era stuff, but the rest of the album didn't do much for me, though I appreciated the attempts to explore a more varied palette than usual.

It just seems like the current trend, although Magic may have been a tale tale sign. Actually, I think you could add Born To Run SE to the list, but I admit that is a stretch... Plus I want the version with DVD, but I'm irritated the packaging is bigger than a standard cd release, yet smaller than a standard DVD release.
