You guys are hysterical. Really - you are. Pray tell, what would your top 10 lists be for the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's?

Off-topic, but doesn't it seem kinda weird how the start of a decade is usually calm, and ends up chaotic? 1960-1964 (calm 'n easy - singing about birds and bees, my boyfriend's back kind of violence) 1965-1969 (chaotic and nuts - songs about death and dying, psychedelic music and drugs); 1970-1975 (calm - had former burn-outs singing about how they ruined their lives and lost their loves) 1976-1979 (easy listening gave way to Disco and cocaine); 1980-1985 (new-wave and pop music) 1986-1989 (freestyle)

Early 70s and 80s were much "louder" musically than later in the decade. Especially the 70s.

Anyway, in no particular order...

1. How a Resurrection Really Feels - The Hold Steady
2. Pot Kettle Black - Wilco
3. Pompeii Au Gatterdammerung - The Flaming Lips
4. Just Be Simple - Songs: Ohia
5. Miracle Drug - A.C. Newman
6. Heaven is a Honky Tonk - Ray Lamontagne
7. Dreamed I Saw Soldiers - Neil Halstead
8. (Drawing) Rings Around the World - Super Furry Animals
9. Here it Comes - Doves
10. The Patient - Tool

"Pot Kettle Black" is great. My pick from that album would have to be "War on War" though.

Sparks — "Angst in My Pants"
The Rolling Stones — "Under My Thumb"
Wire — "Dot Dash"
Gang of Four — "Natural's Not In It"
Hall & Oates — "Friday Let Me Down"
Can — "Oh Yeah"

The fast "Poor Places" outtake is probably the greatest thing I've heard of those sessions. But since it wasn't officially released I couldn't use it. The album has very few poor songs.

I noticed a few votes for Arcade Fire's "No Cars Go", but my vote is absolutely for "Intervention". That song continues to blow my mind completely. Immensely powerful stuff.

How about opening your mind and checking out some of the songs? You may find your new favorite band in some of these lists!

Most of my top ten of the last eight years would be songs by David Gray.

Maybe some Tal Wilkenfeld mixed in there.

Radio/MTV etc don't play good songs, so I think the fact that a lot of people are naming, not neccesarily popular songs is a sign of good taste here.

if you're going to argue about usage of a word you might as well spell it correctly: pretentious
