Well, here's a thought - I (and most others) have heard Fergie's songs, along with Daughtry's, and we didn't pick them because we've heard all these other songs you haven't.

If you would expand your horizons a bit beyond what Clear Channel shoves down your gullet, maybe you'd like some of this stuff better than the things you've already been exposed to.

Rocky Raccoon didn't peak on the Billboard Hot 100 in the 21st Century, and Broadway did. That's the difference.

But if it is an issue, I'll substitute it for The Only Difference by Panic! At The Disco. Happy?

People - these songs you're listing seem pretty obscure to me. I mean, did these songs make a lot of money? Did they get heavy rotation on contemporary radio? Will these songs be remembered in 30 years as "representative of the decade?"

Songs should be significant - much like Come On Eileen by Dexys Midnight Runners was in 1983. Just sayin'....

Anytime I'm on the fence over whether I like a song or not I check Billboard 100 and whether or not it has been on a NOW That's Music! collection before deciding.

Is this not a thread for our top ten songs? If it were all about which ones were on the charts longest or are the most recognizable, one could just go peruse Billboard or whatever. I've barely heard anything on the radio this decade... it's just not something I'm interested in listening to, so searching out music that does appeal to me, obscure or not, takes priority. Hearing songs that really, really click for me doesn't make them any less significant than something played on the radio.

Perhaps "Top ten radio singles of the 2000s" would've been a more appropriate title if that's what you were after.

I thought it was the "Look how eclectic my tastes are" thread.

That's the way all these threads go. I assumed Buttmunker meant mainstream so that's how I responded.

I listen to what I listen to, and I don't think my choices were very eclectic or obscure. They were mainly garage rock songs I heard on the radio a lot.

This is what the original poster said. Nothing within mentioned "personal favorites," instead mentioned "best of the best." How anything else got interpeted is beyond me.

Considering "best" and even "best of the best" are purely subjective terms, there's no way these lists could be anything but personal favorites. At least, any meaningful lists.

I personally wouldn't include "Down Under" in my list of best of the best songs of the 80's; I fucking hate that song.

you may not have liked Down Under, but nobody could refute that it was huge. I mean, of course lists will be subjective, but only to a point. If you look at a Best-of list of the 60's or the 70's, you're going to recognize the songs - whether you liked them or not, well-fine, but you'll still know them.

These songs are utterly foreign to me. I admit I'm out of touch this decade, but am I that out of touch?

I think this is what the OP wanted, for whatever reason:

Oops!....I did it again - Britney Spears
Fallin' - Alicia Keys
Lady Marmalade - Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya & Pink
Without Me - Eminem
Bring Me to Life - Evanescence
Crazy in Love - Beyonce & Jay-Z
This Love - Maroon 5
Toxic - Britney Spears
Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
Promiscuous, Nelly Furtado f/ Timbaland

Maybe?

You forgot Milkshake and Hey There Delilah.

When I made my list, I looked at my CD collection program, sorted it by year and scrolled until I saw an album with a song really stuck out for me. I listed it, then pared the list down to 10(20). Sure there's songs many haven't heard of, but I don't care about radio airplay unless it's on NPR's All Songs Considered.

Yes, yes you are.

BTW, here's a song that, according to your rules, is more representative of 1983:
