Yeah, I picked up on the Buckethead sound right away. I'm halfway on my first listen, but the album isn't grabbing me at all. A little too pop sounding and overall just so conflicting in styles. Someone compared it to Paul McCartney in Wings and the effort he made to sound nothing like the Beatles and maybe there is some comparison. This definitely doesn't sound like early GNR, but I'm hearing things I heard in some parts of Use Your Illusion.

I don't know yet. It definitely isn't something I would consider terrible, but I just don't know if it is something that will stick with me either.

I love how many people's main complaint with the thing is that it is overproduced. Of course it is overproduced, it has been in development for fourteen fucking years! That said, it is certainly an Axl Rose solo album with the Guns N Roses moniker, for better or for worst. I do really like "Catcher in the Rye" though, and I am willing to give it a shot, Axl Rose wailing is much better than half the stuff that passes as music these days.

You do have a good point there

I was in Best Buy last night and they had a huge display of the thing, with probably 150 copies, and it looked completely full. Either they're restocking it pretty quickly, or this album isn't selling at all. I'm very interested to see how this does on the charts.

Same here, my BB had the huge display with less then 20 compies gone. A few people stopped by it and looked, but no takers.

I'm almost through my first listen. There are a few tracks that I like such as "Chinese Democracy", "Better", and "Sorry". The rest will take awhile to absorb. The earlier comment on this sounding 'overprouced' isn't kidding. Most tracks feature at least 3-5 different guitar players, not taking into account how many layers of tracks each player laid down in the studio. There is a ton of things going on in every track. Other than the name on the cover, this bears absolutely no resemblance to the G'NR of days gone by.

I was in two different Best Buy's yesterday, and I almost bought it for 7.99 as a curiosity, but then I decided I didn't want to give Axl money for being a douche for so long.

I liked the first three tracks, but then it goes into sappy ballad land and the album never recovers. It's a shame because I think the beginning of the album gets it right, an updated Gn'R sound that still rocks. Unfortunately three good songs doesn't even qualify it for mediocre status.

It's unfortunate this is so overproduced. I like it ok and I think it'll grow on me the more I listen to it. I'd be too embarrassed to listen to it in front of anyone though.

Wow, I just got done streaming this and I'm shocked to say that I like it a lot BUT with that said, Chinese Democracy and Shacklers Revenge are pretty shitty songs. I mean I won't say that is final or anything but for right now, they are very run of the mill sounding to me.

This album is fucking weird but that's a good thing and definitely unexpected.

I'll make my final judgement after picking up the disc and listening to it a few times in full. Pretty good so far.

I agree, I'm not even a huge GNR fan but I like the album (then again, maybe that's why I like it).

Listened to the whole thing today, and it sounded exactly as I had expected it to: cluttered, overproduced and lacking in even a single memorable riff or chorus. I'm sure sales for the first week or will be pretty strong, what with the curiosity factor and the die-hards, but within a couple of months this album will be all but forgotten.

That is also my feeling. I think it will be similar to St. Anger. Strong sales first week, $1 used CD bin in a few months.

To those of you who do not like it after your first listen:

I'm not saying this will work for you but if you want, try listening to it through at lease twice more - this is what it took for me (hence my comment on this being a "weird" album meaning in resonates in a weird way).

Again, you like what you like but if your're interested, give it a couple more listens - I also recommend this because I see a lot of people commenting (not necessarily on these boards) differently after a few listens.

Me, I guess you can say I still like it but I still don't have a final judgement.

I know what you mean. I listenend to the whole thing twice on Myspace before it came out and decided it was crap. I've heard it a few more times now and I have to admit "Better" and "If the World" are damn good songs. They're not Guns N' Roses songs (or even rock songs really). But they are good on their own terms. I'm curious to see if anything else grows on me.

from wiki
Nu metal music emphasizes mood, rhythm, and texture over melody. Often, nu metal songs use rhythmic, syncopated riffs played on distorted electric guitars with strings detuned to lower pitches to create a dark and thick sound.

Listened to the whole album, and I must say, it is terrible from beginning to end. There isn't anything memorable or catchy about any of it. I'm surprised that there are GnR fans that feel this is acceptable after 14 years.
I may like Shinedown, but I wouldn't be caught dead cruising through the trailer park listening to this.

I picked up the vinyl the other day and have listened to it three times now. Better & IRS are my two favorite tracks. Overall, a mixed bag, but it keeps growing on me.

You listened to it one time? This album definitely takes more to get into (most albums do)
Plenty of catchy stuff, I've had most of it in my head for days
