I like Chinese Democracy, it's much better than it has any right to be given all of the drama around its release and the years and years in development, but it's not really GnR, and I didn't really want to hear any of it on the reunion tour. It's not what I want to hear Slash and Duff play. Asking them to play it is kind of like asking Axl to sing a Velvet Revolver song.

And, it's worth noting there's a lot of crap out there that's worth a lot of money - but it doesn't change the fact that it's still crap. I.e., I'm sure there are VHS tapes & Laserdiscs out there that are worth something - but, that doesn't change the fact that they're shitty home video formats.

Jealous of those who are seeing GnR on their European leg, as Manic Street Preachers, one of my favorites bands, is opening up for them. If you've never seen them live, you're in for a treat!
What's funny is that while MSP didn't start until about 5 years after GnR, their catalog of songs/albums is almost 5x bigger!

Even though I'm a huge fan, I have never had an interest in seeing G n'R live.
I considered seeing them back in their heyday (late '80's/early '90's). But, at that time I was turned off by true stories of Axl Rose walking out on performances mid-way through (or maybe not even getting mid-way through), throwing tantrums on stage, etc. If I pay good $ to see a band live, I want at least some kind of assurance that they're going to give at least a solid 1 1/2 hour - 2 hour performance. If not, screw them. I'll save myself the trouble, and listen to the CD's of the band - which typically have far superior audio than live performances anyway.

Since they fancied themselves as an "alternative/punk" version of GnR (at least when they fist started), I'd say no. They know exactly who they're playing to, and will play accordingly. And for my money, I'd say James Dean Bradfield, while he's admittedly ripped off a lot of Slash's style and tone at first, might be an even better, more versatile guitar player.

Have to admit, when this album was first released (can't believe it's been since 2008!!!) didn't like it at all but I will now say there are some pretty great songs on it for sure.

Great article & good analysis - Thanks for the link. I've liked CD since I first bought this back in Fall '08 (even though I hadn't heard many/any songs from this beforehand). I find the album very interesting & complex, and - as I stated in a previous post - it's my second favorite Gunners album (behind AFD).
However, I know it was a commercial failure at the time. It's too bad it didn't do better sales, but I think a lot of this was because it just came out long after most of The Gunners' original fans had lost interest in the group & their music.
At the time, I thought that making the CD a Best Buy Exclusive was a mistake, given that it severely limited the amount of sales exposure the album received. However, even if it had a wider release, I'm not sure if it would have done much better.
What I didn't realize was that even though they were "working" on this for 14 years, the album probably could have been released much earlier than 2008 - maybe in 1999 or 2000...the article stated that in '99, it was "99% musically done". I suspect that if it had been released earlier, it would have done at least slightly better in sales - maybe.
In any case, even though it took forever to be released...it's amazing that the album is 10 years old this year. I hope it gets more respect/fans as time goes on. Sometimes certain music/movies/books tank when they're first released, but then as they're reevaluated over the years, get a bigger appreciation as time goes by....

Re: GUNS N' ROSES: "Chinese Democracy" -11/23/08
I believe the album wasn't a huge success because the generation of people who buy music that it was released to have never even heard of Guns N' Roses.
I went to 7-11 the other day for a cup of coffee & the kid behind the counter was wearing a Gn'R T-shirt. I complemented his shirt & he said his girlfriend bought it for him, & asked "what is it, a band?"
Gn'R is my favorite band & I anticipated the release of Chinese Dem like nothing before. I still remember hearing "Better" on the radio for the first time. I couldn't believe I was hearing new Guns material on the radio for the first time in 15 years. I had goosebumps.
Obviously, I picked up the album on it's release day & wasn't too impressed but as time went on the more I listened to it the more I liked it. Now, I can listen to the entire album & always enjoy it but to me, it will always be an Axl Rose solo album.
What do you guys think are the chances of the original Guns line-up getting back in the studio & releasing a new album?

Unfortunately, even though they're on good terms now, unless they have a real burning desire to write and record an album, it's just not worth their time to do so. Their time is better spent touring. And generally, when artists get older, they don't have as much to say artistically.

Richard Fortus: "We're going to try and do another record and get it out soon," he said. "The band's so great right now. I think it will happen faster than you think. I sure hope it happens faster than you think."
Fortus also commented on the possibility that a new Guns N' Roses single could be released in 2019: "It could definitely happen."

Give me Izzy or give me death!
(I honestly think that it's Stradlin who was the secret sauce in GnR's mix that made them special - or rather, a mix of him, Axl and Slash - lose any one of them, no GnR)

I agree with you. It is a shame they could not get the money split even for him to come back into the fold.

I would have 0 interest in something like this. GNR haven't come out with many albums to begin with, and even so a couple of these aren't that great. So, even though I did like CD - I don't think they should bother coming out with anything else at this point. The band is too old, and it's been way too long since their heyday.
