So how does this genius option actually work? Does it create a playlist of your own songs to match the (for lack of a better term) mood of the song you suggest or does it make purchase suggestions based on the song you input? Just curious as One is in my top twenty songs and yet I barely like any of the other 10 on this list? How are they determining this?
You can also refresh it if you don't like what you see... but since it only gave me 10 songs (supposed to be 25) I imagine the refresh would give me the same 10 songs. They also show a sidebar (I turned it off) that gives you suggestions for music you don't have that you may like to purchase. It's odd too, because it doesn't work with everything. I could imagine it not working with stuff that is "questionable", i.e. live tracks, obscure stuff that got ripped from a CD, etc... but I tried it with Go, Speed Racer, Go by Ali Dee and the Deekompressors and it didn't work. I bought the track through iTunes, so obviously it is in their database. |

1) First establishing your iTunes library and grouping all of that information together. 2) Sending all of that information to iTunes to get better clarification of what it just grouped together. 3) iTunes sends the information back so it can match songs on your existing library together, but also give you recommendations to similar songs and albums that you could also buy on iTunes. So far, 99% of the music in my iTunes library has worked (well) with it. There are a few songs that just bring back no Genius playlist at all. :( |
I was wondering how it worked, too. Thanks for the answers.
Do you have to resync your library when you first use the Genius feature? I read that somewhere - I think on the iLounge forums. What's on my iPod and what's in my general music library are two entirely different beasts. I tend to be a pack rat and there's a whole lot of music in my collection that I don't put on my iPod (which itself has close to 17,000 songs), so I manually do my updates. The thought of the hours needed to get my iPod's library to its current state is not an enticing one. If that's the case, I'm going to have to pass on this feature, at least until I get a new iPod and will have to reload all of my songs anyway Of course, I'm using a 160 gb Classic, so it may be a non-issue. |
You have to upload data to iTunes, but you shouldn't have to re-synch your iPod... maybe if you have an iPod that upgrades to get the genius feature (like the Touch). But I don't think the last gen Classic will be able to get the Genius feature for a while - until they update the software for it anyway.

Latest from me - starting with Metallica's One:
|
Okay, thanks. When I got my Classic in January it took several days to get it straight. I loaded all of my music on it, then checked line by line a spreadsheet of what was on my previous iPod, deleting what didn't belong off of the new one. It was a tedious process, to say the least.
I have my doubts that Apple will give the Genius feature to the 160 gb Classic. Prove me wrong, Mr. Jobs! |
I just had to post this one:
