Worth seeing the Misfits?
 

So i have a chance to go see the Misfits, or at least the current lineup they call the misfits down in orlando in Dec. For that matter i also have the chance to see Danzig in Oct. Anyone seen any of these acts recently and have an opinion as to whether they are decent live anymore and worth seeing?

I saw the Misfits last October and they were great. Fun stuff, and Jerry hung out at the merch table signing stuff and taking pics till the last person left (which was me). They played some of the classic stuff, but I actually like the "newer" stuff better, it's more fun and not as "Ooh, I'm scary" as Danzig's stuff was. They played a few Black Flag songs too, since Dez was playing guitar.
I had a ticket to see them again in November, but I got a 12 hour bug that day:(
I'd definitely see them again if they came near me, especially for the ten bucks or so the ticket was (not sure if they're the same pricing nowadays.).
The only bad thing about it was some of the 'hardcore' fans were booing the opening acts, which is something I never do. It was very uncool.

It is only worth seeing the "Misfits" if you have a time machine and can make it back to 1982.

no Danzig, no sale

See thats the debate im having. I would really love to see them from their heyday, but thats not happening. Would love to hear their songs live, i just dont want it to feel like a cover band is playing them. If an experience is still there, im good, but if not i dont know if i want to make the drive.

if Michale Graves were still singing, then maybe, but otherwise, it's nothing special. Jerry Only will stick around and sign autographs and so on, though.

For sure. A reunion with the original lineup would be amazing, but I don't see that ever happening. The newer stuff is just a pale imitation, and not worth bothering with in my opinion. The genuine article ended with the "Die, Die My Darling" 7-inch.

Definitely. Although it's getting to the point where it's not even worth it to see him live anymore.

I hope you weren't wanting to see them on their tour with Motorhead, since they just dropped off.

you're right. although if he does the Blackest of the Black tour again, Behemoth will be on the ticket....who are definitely worth seeing. still, I have 4 free tickets to see Danzig in 02 and skipped out. I'd only see the original line up. and even at that, I would be all that excited.

I saw that abomination (The Jerry Only Trio) once and left halfway through their set.

When you look at the credits of every Misfits & Samhain album
it says all songs written by Glenn Danzig.
So I have to agree with dick_grayson's first post :

I have...and it was fun. But if you look at the current Misfits lineup as a cover band with Jerry, then screw it, go see them. It won't be a bad time, just don't go to it expecting to hear cough/cool like it's 82.

Now I'm off to listen to Walk Among Us on a loop for the rest of my workday...

i saw a gwar/misfits double bill a few years back. i walked out 3 songs into the misfits set and im a huge misfits fan...albeit danzig era. it was awful. gwar on the other hand kicked serious ass.

I saw The Misfits back in '96 with Michale Graves singing. That's probably the only way I'd even consider going now. Graves is a good singer, he just ain't even close to Glenn. His solo albums are pretty cool for anyone who was a Graves-era Misfits fan. Jerry Only, from what I've heard, sucks vocally.

I saw Danzig last year and he did a VERY brief Misfits set with Doyle. It was pretty awesome, but I wish it were longer than 20 min.

Oh, and Danzig still rocks live. Got my tix for Nov. 5th and I can't fucking wait.

I saw that tour, it was 1999. The only time I've seen the "Misfits" and every bad thing I heard was true. A cartoony cover band at best.

An update for anyone that cares. Went and saw Danzig and the Blackest of the Black tour down at the hard rock in orlando. Probably the second worst show ive been to in front of the free 3 Doors Down concert back in college. First you couldnt do anything at the venue except stand there. No moshing no crowd surfing, nothing. Ive dabbled in black metal music, but am not a huge fan. The bands didnt win me over. Came off really lame and hokey. Dimmu Borgir was decent, had a pretty cool mural in the background.

Danzig came out and was ok. Pretty straightforward show. He tripped over his lights near the front of the stage and gave a look to his roadies like after the show they were dead. The guitarist was a badass and i enjoyed watching him play, but i never got into the show as a whole. After watching some clips on youtube of recent Misfits shows i think ive decided i will leave them in the virtual world and will forgo the concert. Hopefully NIN next week will be better.

I saw them on that tour as well. GWAR was outstanding!! I was at the Newport Music Hall (Columbus, OH). I remember I almost went to see GWAR twice that same tour within a couple days, but decided not to go to the Harpos (Detroit) show.

I've been torn about seeing the new Misfit's lineup. It's like hoping against hope but I wouldn't rule out some type of reunion. Danzig is producing Gorgeous Frankenstein which I think is Doyle's new band with Dr. Chud on drums. You never know.

I'm not into the new Misfit's stuff, too produced. I think they have a cd of demos of the newer songs and I actually like those better than the over produced ones.

Walk Among Us rocks. That is probably my favorite from them but I had to pick up Static Age because there is one song on that that isn't in the coffin boxset. I've had all the albums before the cd's were out. I'm old!

I like Samnhain but didn't get into Danzig's solo stuff but he is extremely talented.

Not sure if it'd help now, but that song is available on itunes as well. Since I already had the coffin box, I just dl'd it off itunes and added it to my ipod. Voila!

I have a funny story about the Misfits. I'm old so I remember that before there were CD's, or MP3's, there was vinyl. Now there was a time when official Misfits records were very rare and people would bootleg stuff like mad. It's hard to believe now that Walk Among Us was going for like $80 for the record if you could find it.

Anyway, I read in a fanzine once a letter from some guy. He thanked everybody for buying the Misfits bootleg he put out. He played a record he had and recorded him and his friends cheering through the songs. He released it as a single saying it was a very rare live performance. He sold it for a lot of money and helped put himself through college. Bootleg singles could go for at least $15 so if it only cost $2 to make, he did pretty well.
