Doesn't that go a long way in backing up what I said about it being an unattractive mess of a thread? If this thing was put to rest and normal threads with a defined purpose came about, a higher frequency of meaningful discussion would likely take place, no?

Re: The Official METAL! Thread- Metalcore, Thrash, Progressive, Death, and MORE

Personally, I can only stomach a handful of the gurgle metal bands, but I love the thrash, speed and progressive stuff. Nonetheless, my taste transcends several subgenres of metal, so I check out the new postings, watch if I want, and move along. I think it is good to have one thread that covers all types. Even if a band doesn't float my boat, I still find some of the videos interesting.

Re: The Official METAL! Thread- Metalcore, Thrash, Progressive, Death, and MORE

I brought this up on another forum, but figured hey what the hell mention it here as well. So two questions:
First why do us metalheads feel like all bands must be grouped into some subgenre? I mean I know other types of music have it, but metal takes the cake.
Second, why do some genres get bashed by so many metal fans (metalcore, nu metal) yet some of these bands are uber successful.

I knew a bunch of guys that loved metalcore before it became "popular" and now they are bashing it to no end. Me personally I enjoy a multitude of bands and I don't care how people want to group them I just like the individual bands. To me some bands are too good, whatever subgenre they fall into.

Consider the Green Day example. Punk, as a music genre, was more about response to disco (among other things) than the sound or appearance itself. It ended when it began to reference itself (just like any other genre - The Wild Bunch did that for westerns for a long time) and Green Day and any other punk band since, say, 1987, is something different. The punk movement was not about money or album sales - something that Green Day is known for. Metallica cleaned up the vocals, Kirk played less inspiring solos, Lars toned it down just when he was starting to come correct (AJFA) and there was backlash. Take MTV, selling your songs to corporations.....all this stuff turns people off to certain bands. Commercial success and popularity can kill it for people who've felt a certain band was more "their own."

Beyond that, the metal subgenre thing makes sense. Metal is pretty vague since there's so many areas of the world that do it their own way (Sweden - death metal, Norway - black metal, for example). The differences include band appearance, theme, use of certain instruments (keyboards, for example), production style or approach, song length/movement style.....all this and much more. A lot of "numetal" gets bashed for it's commercial success and hiphop influence (something that doesn't appear much in metal and a lot of metalheads don't care for hiphop......to say the least).

It's always about personal preference and who did what first, who's posing, which bands are in which genre and all that mostly based on there being no specific definitions or rules. The examples I used are my interpretation, so I don't expect it to be universally accepted.

Electronica fans are just as bad.

Maybe, maybe not. There isn't a lot of discussion either way. Personally, when someone posts something new in this thread, I know it's going to be some sort of metal. Other threads, I don't know what the music is going to be like. There have been a few threads started on metal bands which racked up about 10 posts before falling into obscurity.

Try making more metal threads, and see what happens.

I can't tell if that is an honest suggestion or if you're just sardonically inviting me to what you think will be an embarrassing number of threads with no replies other than "What is this crap? Why are they so angry?" And really, I think ten replies is actually pretty good. If it's a band that ten people find, and at least some of them like, after having had no prior knowledge of the band, then it was a good thread. If there was a real discussion or exchange of pertinent information, then it was a good thread, ten replies, or even less, or otherwise. Anything is better than, say, trying to make a thread and getting absolutely no replies, like I did when reporting on maudlin of the Well's latest.

Yeah, I'd hope so. Why would you go into The Official METAL! Thread expecting to hear bluegrass or J-Pop? If somebody made a thread saying, "Hey, check out this awesome x-subgenre band, for fans of x-famous-metal-band," wouldn't you then have an even better idea of what it's going to be like instead of an oversized thread largely consisting of people just stumbling in to post a YouTube link to a song and not much else?

If the Maudlin of the Well post would have been done in this metal thread, I probably would have checked it out.

Yeah, I'd hope so. Why would you go into The Official METAL! Thread expecting to hear bluegrass or J-Pop? Which is my point. No other thread in the music section actually lists what the genre is. While I listen to a lot of different genres, I'm not really interested in keeping up with most of them. Metal, I'm interested in, which is why I always check this thread when it pops up.

More on topic, I saw this band play the other night:

The Agonist

Just bought the new cd today. Totally love all this band does. Just a warning the video isn't PG friendly for those who care, nudity and blood.

Immortal's first album in eight years, All Shall Fall, is due out September 25th for Europe and October 6th for North America.

(more details to come in the next post, so as to get my minimum 30 posts to be allowed to posts links, lol)

Re: The Official METAL! Thread- Metalcore, Thrash, Progressive, Death, and MORE

It features one of their more, uh, less tacky, album covers if I may say so myself.

Short album previews are available HERE
Pre-order through Amazon HERE
Pre-orders of exclusive items and package deals through Nuclear Blast's site HERE

and if you're feeling really saucy, an extra special edition is available through Nuclear Blast's European shop HERE, along with a translation and larger image of the package HERE

It sounds great from the sound of the samples, and I love all the packages. Now I just gotta figure out which one(s) I want and can afford.
