Phil Collins retires to collect Alamo memorobilia

Genesis man will longer tour or record

Phil Collins has announced that he is retiring from music.

Having completed a reunion tour with Genesis, the multi-instrumentalist has said in a newspaper interview that he has no plans to tour or make another album.

Collins told The Times that he will continue to write, simply because he does not know how to stop.

The interview quotes Collins as saying he is more interested in his collection of memorabilia from the Battle Of The Alamo than music.

Collins said: "It's not that unusual for a man of my age, who grew up reading Davy Crockett."

Collins was speaking ahead of his appearance on Sky Arts TV series 'Songbook'.

He re-ignited an old feud with Noel Gallagher. The Oasis man famously said ahead of the 2005 general election: "Vote Labour, if you don't and the Tories get in, (Collins) is threatening to come back from Switzerland, and none of us want that.

Collins said of the comment: "I don't care if he likes my music or not. I do care if he starts telling people I'm a wanker because of my politics. It's an opinion based on an old misunderstood quote."

As much as I like Phil's early work, he hasn't written a decent song in 20 years.

Enjoy your retirement!

Phil is the Rodney Dangerfield of music. I like some of his early stuff. In the 80's, he had an incredible string of hits.

Used to love Collins back in the day. As a Texan I appreciate his zeal. Enjoy your retirement mate.

That is an obscure hobby. Especially for a Brit.

Cartman: [all are high on Ritalin] I think we should go to Lalalapalalala anyway just to see Phil Collins.

Well, I'll be the first to say that I'm sad to see him go. Granted his heart hasn't been in it lately, but it's always sad to see someone from "back then" step down.. there isn't much new music I enjoy. I unfortunately couldn't afford to see Genesis, but I'm sure he'll be back one day in some form. Happy retirement!

Yes believe it or not people still can function at the age of 57 in this world.

How tragic for you not to have a sense of humor (and I'm a LOT closer to 57 than 9).

Collins has been MIA from the music scene for so long that his "retirement" is somewhat of a non-event, so I was only asking if he was alive because I haven't seen any evidence one way or the other for quite a while.

I guess participating in one of the biggest reunion tours of 2007 in stadiums all over Europe and arenas throughout the US kept him pretty much out of sight.

yes, this is still out of sight. it's a niche.
dave matthews is a part of one of the top 5 tours year in year out and he's still considered out of sight by most. sting, on the otherhand, made us all perfectly aware that he was back with the police to the point that most people probably wanted to punch him.
and, aintnosin is right, have a sense of humor. some of us don't like collins, but no one has a personal vendetta against him.

Uh, don't you have to personally know, and/or have interaction with, someone to have a vendetta against them?

who wants to bet he'll be back on another "Farewell Tour" in 2011, or maybe he'll do a Vegas show like Cher and Celine. 57 isn't young, but I highly doubt we've seen the last of Phil for good considering all the artists ten years older than him still doing it. He probably just wants a break.

I disagree, the Tarzan soundtrack from 1999 has a couple more than decent song's and in 2002 from his album Testify the song "Can't Stop Loving You" is a very good song.

I absolutely hated Phil Collins but yet Peter Gabriel is one of my favorite musicians. I look at Phil Collins music as what Peter Gabriel's music would be if it didn't have artistic value.
