Music you CAN'T BELIEVE you used to like

OK, so the other day I was going through some old CDs. I stumbled across some old discs and threw them in the player for old time's sake... only to be HORRIFIED at what was coming through the speakers. So I thought it might be funny to share tales of music you USED to like, but now you CAN'T BELIEVE that you used to listen to.

Note that I am NOT talking about "bands I used to like, but my current group of friends would laugh at me for it", or "bands I used to like, but teenagers think that Culture Club is silly old people's music". I'm also not talking about "guilty pleasure" bands per se. If you're a big, macho, rugby-playin' guy that cranks up the Spice Girls when no one's around... well, that's fine.

Here are my two examples to get the thread started:

Nina Hagen: I liked her in the 80s, 'cos she had that whole "euro-postpunk" thing going. She was hardcore New Wave. In 1991, I went to Germany with a friend of mine; neither of us owned a portable CD player and we didn't think the rental car would have an in-dash CD player, so we didn't bring any. As luck would have it, the car did have a CD player, so I bought a copy of Nina Hagen's Streets album to have something to listen to. I put it in the player the other day... and was shocked at how AWFUL the music was. The album was released just as white folks were discovering hip-hop, and most of the songs are horrible attempts by German people of putting a "hip-hop attitude" to circa 1991 German pop music - which, in my book, is only a shade better than French pop music. And then there's Nina's singing... You know how Bjork will occasionally just "go nuts" on a song? Suddenly she'll just go "WAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAAAAAAAAWW!" for no good reason? Imagine an entire album of this. Nina sounds like a cat caught in a blender, crying desperately for help... and to make it worse, most of the wailing is in German. Blech!

Dark Industrial: I'm not entirely sure if that's the right term for bands like Current 93, Nurse With Wound, or Coil... but there you are. "Industrial music" tends to be bad enough by itself... but these bands try soooooo hard to be eeeevvvvvviiiillll. Ooooooooo! "Let's record ourselves banging some pots and pans together while someone reads a passage from The Necronomicon in a scccaaaarrrrryyy voice"... "Let's throw some flatware in a clothes dryer and turn it on, then mix that with the soundtrack from a porn film and a recording of the Latin mass... played backwards! We're eeeeevvviillll, I tell you!". Good God... what the hell was I thinking? For what it's worth though, I still have the 12" single of Coil's version of "Tainted Love", 'cos that was pretty cool. You can have the rest of it, though. What a bunch of pretentious crap! Why did I ever think that was cool?

Your thoughts?

KISS and Rush.

At least with KISS I can comfort myself that I was in elementary school. But I listened to Rush when I was in high school. The shame, the shame...

-screwy-

Skeletons in the closet... must resist posting... Paula Abdul, Color Me Badd, Kenny G, Nelson, ... no more... yikes.

But you know what, it was all a part of a journey to where I am now. At least I didn't end up with those as my destination.

Actually, I still like all of the music I liked as a kid. I used to listen to the radio for hours in the hopes that they would play "Let's Go" by the Cars "Only the Lonely" by The Motels or "Back on the Chain Gang" by the Pretenders. I still love those songs. Even the more definitely eighties stuff I used to like (Simple Minds, Echo and the Bunnymen, Def Leppard etc) still sounds good to me.

Nick Danger 01-30-08 09:22 AM

The stuff I used to like were Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, X, Elvis Costello, and Pink Floyd. I think it's all stood up pretty well.

But the stuff I disliked because it was unfashionable? Some of that was pretty good, too. I thought that I was cool and I wasn't following the crowd. But I was just following a different crowd.

Recent news regarding a reunion tour prompted me to remember that somewhere I have a cassette tape of New Kids on the Block. I think I got it just because it was popular... I can't recall actually liking any of their music... except the Weird Al versions.

God only knows... but my wife, her sister, and her friend were all very excited about it the other night.

I actually own several Poison albums. The shame.

Promethean 01-30-08 11:21 AM

During the latter part of the 90s, when I was in high school, it seemed like everyone (in Southern California at least) was into "deep house" music. It's similar to techno and rave music. One of the cds I had was by Richard "Humpty" Vision. Today, just that name would turn me off, but those were different times back then. I'm glad to say that I got rid of all that stuff years ago.

atlantamoi 01-30-08 12:43 PM

I was an early teen in the late 70's and was spoon fed a weird variety of music. I could listen to the Cars and Elvis Costello as easily as Rush, The Outlaws, Styx and Top 40 disco. I didn't really have a special capacity to discern big differences between these rock bands. I just liked it all.

Most of these can remain guilty pleasures and I'm not sure there is anything that I can't believe I liked. I mean, Styx had some horrible music, but I can see how a 13-year-old lapped it up.

I stand by my assessment that "Look What the Cat Dragged In" (and Crue's "Shout at the Devil", for that matter) kick ass.

ugh...can't believe I actually used to listen to (and a huge collector/fan) of Erasure & Pet Shop Boys back in the late 80's/mid-90's...still like the Mode but when I think of the thousands I spent on 12" rare remixed vinyl etc. it makes me queasy...

yes, I am very straight.

Milli Vanilli and crappy alterna-90's bands like Better than Ezra

Rocketdog2000 01-30-08 03:25 PM

The only one that really comes to mind is Stryper. That's the only one that's truly cringe-worthy, to me - but damn if I didn't love them at the time.

Most everything else, I can still live with, and enjoy even if no one else does. My tastes are pretty expansive, they just change from day to day. What might be in favor, personally, this week, might not next. I have also never fallen prey to whatever is "trendy" currently in music. Nor do I need anyone else to tell what is "cool", or what I should be listening to. I like what I like, and screw what anybody else thinks of it. If it moves me, that's all I care about. I could just as easily decide to throw on an Enuff 'Z Nuff album today, as I could one from Arcade Fire - and I'd derive the same kind of pleasure from each.

But then everyone's tastes are different. For example, I would never refer to Better Than Ezra as a "crappy alterna-90's band" - as I still like them quite a bit. Just about every album they've done has been better than the ones preceding it; and they put on one hell of a great live show. In fact, there are very few bands I've seen (out of hundreds of concerts) that have as much fun, and genuinely seem to be enjoying themselves on stage as much as they do. However, if someone else chooses not to like them, that is their loss, or gain, depending on how they choose to see it.

UAIOE 01-30-08 03:42 PM

I still mix up "Better than Ezra" and "Toad the Wet Sprocket" and I have no idea why.

I've always looked at my musical past as building towards that day when I figured out what it was a truly like, which happened about 10 years ago.

But I suppose if I had pick something I'd ask myself why I tried to get into 311 as much as I did. I don't hate 311, I just don't know what I was thinking in terms of wanting them to be an A-List (meaning heavily liked) group.

In high school I had albums by Korn and Limp Bizkit. I no longer have those. Other stuff I listened to in HS I break out every now and then (like The Offspring). I'm more ashamed to say I had the Korn and LB music, though...

I'm with ya on that one. I actually downloaded a few of their greatest hits (not to mention their unique rendition of the Christmas classic "Winter Wonderland") and stuck them on my mp3 player, where they sit and gather virtual dust until I'm in just that right kind of nostalgic mood.

The one that came to mind first for me, though, was The Jackson 5. I ate that shit up when I was a little kid, playing the few 45's I had on my little record player. Mind you, I still like to listen to most of the music from when I was younger, but that just goes back a little too far. A little too old school, you know? These days, I can give any of those songs about 10 seconds, and then I'm ready for something else, and I'm like, "I really listened to that?" I even own the Jackson 5 box set "Soulsation!", but, truthfully, it hasn't even made it onto my mp3 player. In fact, I don't think I've ever listened to it!

DonnachaOne 01-30-08 09:02 PM

Strange, I don't seem to have any of these sort of regrets. Even the stuff that's cheesy and dated as hell is still fun to listen to, such as Take That and East 17.

Hollowgen 01-30-08 09:11 PM

i'm probably most embarassed at owning Sublime and Cake CDs. cake especially. what a load of rubbish.

also, tori amos' "boys for pele" was really embarassing.
