Best year in music, 1991 is hard to beat.

Atleast for me and the music I was into at the time. I started high school in the fall of '91 and always remember that being one of the best years for music, with great albums coming out.

These are the ones I could remember buying and playing regularly and my brother having some of them on cassette tape. I know this is not comprehensive and some are compilations, but these are the ones that were big for me.

Metallica - self titled (black album)
Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion I and II
Van Halen - For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears
Nirvana - Nevermind
U2 - Achtung Baby
Tesla - Psychotic Supper
Spin Doctors - Pocketfull of Krytopnite
Pearl Jam - Ten
Skid Row - Slave to the Grind
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Motley Crue - Decade of Decadence
Ratt - Ratt & Roll 8191

Any great albums I missed?

Other great years in music?

DVD Josh 01-24-08 02:28 PM

Smashing Pumpkins - Gish
Bryan Adams - Waking Up the Neighbors

I'd put my money on 1972 and 1980.

Matthew Sweet "Girlfriend". OP, you and I have drastically different tastes for sure. That list gives me the ickies.

Supermallet 01-24-08 06:01 PM

Is that the Matthew Sweet song on GHII? I can't stand that song.

That was high school days, my music tastes have changed drastically since then, but just thought of that time in my life and it was more of a just getting into music and cd's coming out kind of nostalgia.

To it's credit, that is a cover.

My favorites from 91:

This Mortal Coil - Blood
His Name Is Alive - Home Is In Your Head
Siouxsie & the Banshees - Superstition
Mary's Danish - Circa
Material Issue - International Pop Overthrow

Hulkabrgr 01-24-08 06:36 PM

Maybe it was because of my age in 1991( 15-16), but I always considered 1991 the best year for music in my lifetime.

7Keys 01-24-08 06:56 PM

1988 for me:
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
Helloween - Keeper of the 7 Keys Pt 2
Metallica - And Justice for All
Iron Maiden - 7th son of a 7th son
Anthrax - State of Euphoria (Not their best, but I like it)

I'm sure there's more, but that's off the top of my head.

I wouldn't call '91 the best year in music by any stretch, but I do like most of the albums suggested thus far and would add:
Queen: Innuendo
Lenny Kravitz: Mama Said
Temple of the Dog
Rush: Roll The Bones
REM: Out of Time

This is the year that made me stop listening to rap and start listening to rock. IMO this was the best year for music. Agree with all your choices EXCEPT Ratt, Motley Crue, Skid Row, Tesla (although Song and Emotion is an excellent song), and ESPECIALLY Spin Doctors (I've always hated that band). Someone else mentioned Temple of the Dog, which also belongs on your list.

Any year from 1976 through 1986 rolls up and smokes 1991's ass. And every year since then, too.

Primus - Sailing The Seas Of Cheese

I picked up the above albums in 1991 along with:

Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese
Temple of the Dog
Butthole Surfers - Weird Revolution
Nine Inch Nails - FIx

Also I was just a few months late to the Jane's Addiction purchases and picked up the 2 1990 albums sometime during 1991.
