Here I am chiming in again with earth-shattering news....j/k...

....but, upon viewing the Detroit Revenge show on Kissology 3, I must give credit where it's due; it's by far the best/most energetic/musically adept show I'd seen from the group since, oh, around the "Rock & Roll Over" tour. And maybe even a little better/tighter on the musically adept part! Don't get me wrong, the early years will always be my favorite, but now I'm thinking that I may have been mistaken wishing (for many years) that the original four would reunite, which happened, and by the look/sound of it, that's when the band lost their "fire" musically. They now play (very obviously I might add) to click tracks, with little or no soul left in the sound (and it was the same way with many of the Ace/Peter shows, not just the recent Tommy/Eric ones). I mean, it's played tightly and professionally, but with little real energy.

(here comes the sacrilege)...

...maybe they shouldn't have reunited. I guess I should be careful what I wish for, LOL...

I was one of the minority group that wanted nothing to do with a Reunion - unless Ace and Peter really (and I mean REALLY) were in musical shape to pull it off - AND do new albums as a group the way the Paul/Gene/Eric/Bruce/Eric line-ups did. (They weren't, as it turned out.)

The last thing I wanted was for KISS to become The Beach Boys of Metal playing all the OLD hits, but nothing new. Well, the last thing I wanted was what I got.

It was entertaining, but KISS became an oldies act. With Bruce and Eric they had still been making great albums and putting on great concerts and were still a vital band (maybe not as successful, but still able to keep moving forward musically), and that was a hard thing for me to see come to an end.

Psycho Circus was a sham, and now Paul and Gene are convinced that no one will accept a new KISS album the way they do the classics. Psycho Circus' failure was not because fans didn't want new material, it was because they didn't want THAT material. Had it sounded like a mixture of Alive, Destroyer, and Revenge (and featured the original band on at least half the album) then Psycho Circus would likely have sold twice as many copies as it ended up selling.

So now we look back on KISS in the past tense - until they put out a new studio album.

If they do, I'll hold it up to Revenge and Carnival of Souls as the benchmarks for how good it should be.

Well, Mark only played parts of 3 shows before being officially, and completely, replaced by Bruce, and there is no known audio or video recordings of those shows.

The LAST Kissology? I'm betting there'll at least be a mega-set featuring all of the bonus DVDs, and maybe another entire volume of new unseen stuff. Gene $immons will squeeze every last dime from every last one of us.

The KISS 10th Anniversary Tour was my very first rock concert. They played with Motley Crue at the Universal Amphitheater in LA. I think I paid $10.50 for that show and I was not too far from the stage.

I don't know, I just don't see KISS doing any more albums. There's no need to. It's been, what, almost four years since the last tour (Rock the Nation tour). They're due for another big summer shed extravaganza, which will be bragged up as bigger than ever, more lights, more fireworks, more rarities, blah blah blah.

And of course we'll all be there.

At a certain point the constant touring without a new album will get old and the diminishing returns will force Gene and Paul to shake something up in a big way.

A new album to support would do that. New material, a radically altered stage set - it would work. The key is to make sure that the album isn't only good, but the RIGHT album. (Something that sounds like a cross between classic KISS - the first 6 studio albums - and Revenge, with just a hint of the 80's stuff. Psycho Circus, on the other hand, sounded like a cross between Asylum, Crazy Nights, Destroyer, and Unmasked - and that wasn't what the fans wanted.)

I think it's telling that KISSOLOGY 3 has the highest sales of the series. Is it the Reunion era that everyone's dying to see? I don't think so (although I could be wrong). Most fans agree that Ace & Peter were wildly inconsistent during the Reunion era, and the Tiger Stadium gig is a trainwreck on all fronts (performance, video presentation), so I can't see that being a big draw.

The Dodger Stadium gig? Yeah, that was a great show (again, I was there ), but I think the real reason that this set is selling so well is the Detroit '92 show from the Revenge tour, and I'll bet that Best Buy had brisk sales of the set thanks to the Sao Paulo '94 bonus disc.

I could always be wrong, but I don't think that I am.

I think it has more to do with the fact that this version is FIVE disks and not 3 or 4. They calculate sales by taking the number of units sold times the amount of disks in the package. If they sell the same amount of units, the fact that KISSOLOGY 3 has more disks in it means it's going to have higher sales.

edit: I may have that wrong... what I mentioned had to do with platinum certification, not sales. It may also apply to sales, but I don't know for sure.

I saw Kiss once, at the "Blazefest" concert in '94. It was a one-off concert for a radio station (103.5, The Blaze!) and probably one of the last big shows for the Revenge lineup before Unplugged and the reunion. A lot of songs began with intros such as "We haven't played this one in forever..." due to much of the setlist determined by call-in votes to the radio station.

The KISS Alive Forever book doesn't note which stage they used. (They used a few different stages in the '94-'95 period - including the Animalize and Hot In The Shade stages!)
