Re: Most moving/emotional instrumental piece?

In terms of being evocative, my vote is the open titles track to Blade Runner. The first booming base drum hit and then the high, reverbed synth line instantly sets the tone of the entire movie. It's probably my favorite soundtrack.

If you want to talk something that was actually released on an album, I really like "The Great Skua" by British Sea Power (please ignore the irritating fan video):

I came in to post "An Ending (Ascent)" by Brian Eno before realizing that on November 14, 2007 at 12:28 PM I posted this:

Definitely. I am also a big fan of Michael Nyman's Gattaca soundtrack, and Taro Iwashiro's Memories of Murder soundtrack.

Deep Purple - Son of Alerik

It's a B-side from "Perfect Strangers", but it's also one of my favorite tracks by them. Fantastic guitar work.

Re: Most moving/emotional instrumental piece?

Lots of good picks here, but this was the first thing to come to mind for me.

Re: Most moving/emotional instrumental piece?

The entire score for 'The End', the series finale of Lost, by Michael Giacchino. I got it on CD today and have already listened to it several times. It's a perfect culmination of the work he did on the show for six years.

Turn up the volume. The sound is low:

D899 #3 is beautifully melancholic, too (played by the incomparable Vladimir Horowitz):

Re: Most moving/emotional instrumental piece?

Blur's "Battery In Your Leg", which was the last song with Graham Coxon, and only one on Think Tank.

Coxon's guitar sounds so far away and detached, which I'll assume was intentional. I'm a huge fan of reunions or giving a friendship/relationship a proper ending, so the song just really hits me.

Re: Most moving/emotional instrumental piece?

I love and agree with virtually everyone's choices here. I know there's a lot of music that makes me emotional, but this one comes to mind above all else for me:

Respighi: The Pines of Rome (RSO Stuttgart; Georges Pretre conducting)
IV: The Pines of The Appian Way
<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/fH4csOibl18?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fH4csOibl18?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

BTW, I LOVE the entire piece and I recommend for anybody to go to YT and check out the rest of this performance (and/or any other interpretation of it) if you have never heard it before. It would have been a bit much to flood the thread with imbedding all 4 sections!
