Your top discovered, unearthed, and re-discovered bands/albums of the year?

OK, what are your top discovered, unearthed, and re-discovered albums of this year?

Discovered means an album or band that is completely new and did not exist before this year. Basically, your favorite new band (whether or not they have an album out this year). If they had an album out last year... that's not a new band. Mine is Vampire Weekend.

Unearthed meaning an album that is at least a couple of years old that you had not heard until now. I've been listening to Caetano Veloso, Talk Talk, and Os Mutantes all this year. They have some great stuff but I never really knew about them a year ago.

Re-discover means an album you had or somewhat liked a while ago but now, listening to it with fresh ears, is revelatory (or much better than what you remember). That album for me is easily THe Kooks - Inside In / Inside Out. I liked it when it came out but stopped listening to it a few weeks in. Now, I can't get enough of it.

Discovered: none yet.

Unearthed:

Holy. Shit.

The UK hype machine is all over Gallows right now, and I'm tempted to say they deserve it. I don't think there's a single bad track on Orchestra Of Wolves. And any new band that's fighting the good fight against the steady degeneration of punk into emo is OK in my book.

Rediscovered:

I'll admit that I basically stopped working through the Pixies' discography after getting to a borrowed copy Bossanova, since it just didn't "click" the first time I listened to it. I just picked up my own copy a few weeks ago; and while I still don't think it lives up to Surfer Rosa or Doolittle (but what does?), I'm really digging some of the stronger tracks.

Discovered: Justice. (Cross) is well on its way to being one of my favorite electronic albums of all time. Also, Battles: the first album to introduce an entirely new sound to me in a long time.

Unearthed: Built to Spill, Okkervil River and Talk Talk (what a coincidence, The Bus). Three great bands I knew nothing about and now obsess over. Also, vintage rockabilly. I can't get enough Johnny Burnette, Gene Vincent, Eddy Cochran, Carl Perkins etc.

Re-discovered: Elvis Costello, particularly Trust and Get Happy! I listened to Armed Forces, the debut and This Year's Model so much that they no longer held my interest. Trust and Get Happy got me back into them.

Potential 4th category: bands that finally delivered fully on their promise this year: LCD Soundsystem, Tegan and Sara, Kings of Leon, MIA, Band of Horses.

This has been one of the best years for music in a long time, IMO.

I definately agree with on LCD and MIA - the latter in particular since I feel her second album is superior in every possible way to her debut.

1983

1984

These albums kick ass and Lita is excellent on lead guitar. Too bad the label made her so mainstream after these two releases.

(This is technically their second release, but the first was an OOP ep with (I believe) a different line-up, so I don't count it)

(Amazing Swedish doom metal band. Fantastic album.)

(I had forgotten over the past few years how much I love this band)

The Twilight Sad - I think they had an ep out prior to this year, but Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters came out in early 2007. Great Scottish rock band.

Unearthed
Of Montreal - I'd heard of them, but never heard them until a friend had Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? on one night. I've picked up that one and The Sunlandic Twins and love them both.

Patrick Wolf - Picked up The Magic Position after checking it out at a listening station at a local record store. It's one of my favorite albums of the year and I also picked up Lycanthropy, though I wouldn't put it on the same level.

Re-Discovered
Black Lab - I listened the hell out of Your Body Above Me in college, but had never heard anything about the band after it. Luckily, I stumbled across the band's MySpace page and found that they were still around and making music. I bought their last two albums and really enjoy both of them.

Cobra Skulls - Sounds like old Against Me, which is a lot better than new Against Me.
The Dear Hunter - They actually had an EP out in 2006, but they put out their first full length earlier this year, and it's amazing.
Kay Kay And His Weathered Underground and Wild Orchid Children - Both bands came out of the breakup of Gatsbys American Dream, and both are awesome. Kay Kay got their start in late 2006, but they put out a live CD/DVD that has gotten numerous spins from me. Wild Orchid Children have only released tracks online, but I love what I've heard thus far.
Jaguar Love - Featuring 2 members of The Blood Brothers and 1 from Pretty Girls Make Graves, these guys are like the catchiest parts of both bands without the blood-curdling screaming of the former.
Dr. Manhattan - Sort of like The Faint, but with better vocals.

Unearthed
Alexisonfire - Never liked these guys until I saw them live earlier this year. Picked up a copy of Crisis and haven't looked back.
Common Market - I've started getting into local hip-hop and these guys are easily one of the best.

Re-Discovered
Say Anything - Just listened to Is A Real Boy recently to prepare for seeing them live. That album has kept its luster a lot better than I'd expected.
Operation Ivy - I almost always listen to their only CD at least once a year for about a week straight and marvel at how freaking good these guys were.
Marvin Gaye - Hadn't listened to What's Going On in a few years. One of the greatest albums ever.

Delivered
Blue Scholars, Minus The Bear, The Aggrolites, Big D And The Kids Table, and several of the bands listed in the above categories all put out stellar albums this year.

do you have the new Groove Armada album - it's pretty good.

A double disc of Soulwax remixes got released in the UK this week.

I listened to 2/3 of it at the gym earlier this week. It was good for the most part. I'm partial to Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub).

on the new Soulwax...I had no idea.

I recently rediscovered "Shadows and Light" by Wilson Phillips which I actually think is a fantastic album. Yeah, youre probably thinking, WILSON PHILLIPS? But this was much more mature and musically diverse than their first album. And what vocal harmonizing those girls had. And what an album.
