Help with an instrumental rock mix CD.

Looking for ideas of things to put on a mix CD of rock instrumentals. Anyone have suggestions?

Here's what I have so far:

Allmans - Liz Reed (studio)
Cream - Steppin' Out
Santana - Samba Pa Ti
Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover
this ELO instrumental - the name is entirely escaping me right now.
SRV - Little Wing?
Rush - YYZ? Something else?

Point me in the right direction.

My favorite 2 Rush instrumentals are La Villa Strangiato and The Main Monkey Business (from the latest release).

For the "Tom Brady Sucks Instrumental Rock CD" for Dave, I nominate Satriani's Surfing with the Alien.

Pearl Jam's Brother from the Lost Dogs b-sides/rarities collection.

Clutch - "Small Upsetters"
Clutch - "Wysiwyg"

Gov't Mule - "3 String George"

Little Wing may be too slow, go for these SRV greats. . .

Stevie Ray Vaughan - "Testify"
Stevie Ray Vaughan - "Rude Mood"

Also some short but cool ones. . .

Cake - "Arco Arena"

Bouncing Souls - "The Screamer"

 I would also recommend "House of the Bullets" from Satch's Crystal Planet CD.

Other ideas:

Battle Without Honor or Humanity - Tomoyasu Hotei (from Kill Bill Vol. 1 and a bunch of commercials)

Malignant Narcissism - Rush

Jaws of Life - John Pertucci

Wizards in Winter - Trans Siberian Orchestra (used in the youtube video with all the christmas lights)

I'm guessing the ELO song is "Fire on High".

Rhino released a five volume rock instrumental set that is amazing, but might not be exactly what you are looking for. You can get the discs separately though.

The Beastie Boys have a couple all-instrumental albums. Pretty interesting stuff, nothing like their rap days.

Def Leppard - Switch 625

No Vai?!?!?!?!?!

How about "The Audience Is Listening" or "Erotic Nightmares"?

That whole album is great, but my money is on "For The Love Of God" and "Greasy Kid's Stuff".

Pelican "City of Echoes":

Also, if you like post-Rush prog/hard rock/metal, Mew's "Circuitry of the Wolf" is a killer instrumental lead-off track.:

Oh definitely the whole album is awesome.

I thought I'd list the more "commonly known" songs is all. My personal favorites are "I Would Love To", "Sisters", and "Answers/The Riddle".

nodeerforamonth 10-31-07 06:26 PM

How could I forget? "Seen Your Video" by the Replacements!!!

7Keys 10-31-07 06:29 PM

Motley Crue's Wildside is really good. Just like the version with vocals, except it's without vocals.

SlingshotBandit 11-02-07 12:48 AM

Most of the stuff by Man or Astroman, but it can be kind've spacy/ethereal sounding.

Would Dick Dale work for a lil' surf-rock vibe?

Beachwood Sparks' "Ballad of Never Rider" would work too.

B5Erik 11-02-07 08:29 AM

Iron Maiden - "Losfer Words"

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lewXAPvcmes"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lewXAPvcmes" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

(If you like Rush's "YYZ," then you'll like this - it's somewhat similar, but VERY Iron Maiden.)
