KISSology: Vol. 3 details revealed

KISS has set a December 18, 2007 release date for the third volume of a definitive DVD collection, "Kissology – Vol. 3 1992-2000". The set will contain nearly 10 hours of KISS live on stage, including songs that didn't make it into the broadcast or CD version of the MTV "Unplugged" performance; and the much-heralded Queens, NY Coventry Show from December 1973 — the band's first-ever concert filmed in makeup in its entirety.

"Kissology - Vol. 3 1992-2000" has been super-expanded to four DVDs, featuring over 100 live performances, commentary from Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Bruce Kulick and Tommy Thayer as well as a 20-page full-color booklet.

Five concerts are included:

* Detroit – 1992
* Detroit – 1996
* Los Angeles – 1998
* New Jersey – 2000
* Queens, NY - 1973

One version of the release will feature a fifth bonus disc of KISS' performance at the KROQ Weenie Roast on June 15, 1996. Tracks include: "Deuce", "Love Gun", "Calling Dr. Love", "Firehouse", "Shock Me", "100,000 Years", "Detroit Rock City", "Black Diamond" and "Rock and Roll All Nite".

Holy crap. They keep getting better and better.

PerryD 10-16-07 02:51 PM

I was disappointed with the picture and sound quality of what I've watched of Volume 1, I guess they may be an improvement from people's 20 year old VHS bootlegs, but I can't imagine that much since it literally looks like a worn VHS. I haven't gotten around to Volume 2 yet, but I imagine that the quality of Vol 2 and Vol 3 have to be much much higher quality due to the age and also budget. Looks like there will be a Volume 4 to wrap up the series.

The content of Volume 3 looks amazing, although discs 4 and 5 look a bit sparse, maybe 20 minutes each?

nothingfails 10-16-07 03:28 PM

thank god it only goes up to 2000, I personally think they should either find new characters for Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer or remove the makeup again, I only wanna see Ace and Peter as Ace and Peter.

This set looks great!!!!! Out of curiosity, will the 92 Revenge Detroit show be a better quality than the excerpts on Kiss Konfidential? I always hated the ultra-grainy appearence of that video.

Will there just be one bonus disc this time? I know I would love bonus discs of the Konventions from 95

Spiderbite 10-16-07 03:29 PM

So I guess I need to get rid of my current Unplugged dvd.

The 1973 concert has me the most excited. Sweet.

I agree 1000%.

bigjim25 10-16-07 03:57 PM

I will buy this just for MTV Unplugged. I love that whole CD. :up:

nothingfails 10-16-07 04:04 PM

the one thing missing that stuns me is that they weren't able to secure the 1996 Grammy footage where they appeared in full costume and makeup and with Ace and Peter for the first time in ages. I think that moment is a vital part of KISStory and would've been a great intro for the second disc which is all about the reunion tour.

Rogue588 10-16-07 04:43 PM

I really wish I was more than a "casual" Kiss fan. I realize that the whole multiple "bonus disc" thing sucks (at least for completists), but I really respect Gene & Paul for doing these KISSologies for the fans.

If only other bands would follow suit..

zombiezilla 10-16-07 07:24 PM

AC/DC and The Ramones both did a helluva job recently, putting out similar DVD sets, Rogue588. I'm definitely in for this one, too!

The only thing that makes me nervous is selling it before this set comes out and then something happens & Unplugged is not included in the set. Decisions, decisions.

Spiderbite 10-16-07 07:58 PM

Tried to find a used selling price on Ebay for Unplugged and there were only bootlegs to be found. Half.com has them ranging from $125 to $300! Woah.

zombiezilla 10-16-07 08:40 PM

Yeah, unload it now, and get the moolah. Unplugged will definitely be on there.

:thumbsup: I was worried they would put a Singer and Thayer show on there but thankfully they didn't. I can't wait to finally see the Coventry show. I would assume the KROQ bonus disc will be the one sold at all stores except for Wal Mart and Best Buy.

These days a Singer and Thayer show is MUCH better than a show with Criss and Frehley would be. Eric and Tommy have groove, vibe, feeling - and they are great musicians (Eric really is one of the best Rock drummers in the world - just ask Alice Cooper, Brian May, and Tony Iommi - they'll all tell you that he is one of the very best). Ace and Peter long ago passed their expiration dates as vital musicians that can actually bring something to the table rather than keep things off it! (Gene and Paul were able to expand and change the set list after Ace & Peter departed again.)

Having said all that I love the listing for this DVD, EXCEPT what's missing.

Namely, the Arsenio Hall performances, the Dick Clark New Year's Rockin' Eve performances, and the COMPLETE track listing for the 1992 Revenge show (MIA - inexplicably - are "Hotter Than Hell," "Firehouse," "I Want You," "Forever," "Strutter," and "Shout It Out Loud"). The performances of those songs on that tour were among their best ever, and leaving those songs off is just lame.

BUT - the stuff that will be ON the set is all VERY cool. Glass 3/4 full here, I guess.

Can't wait to get this, I'm most excited about the 1996 Detroit reunion show at Tiger stadium :rip:, i live in the detroit area and it was so crazy around here that day.

So what kind of money have you seen these going for? I want to figure out what minimum price I should at least get for it.

I grew up with 80's KISS (Kulick/Carr), so I don't hold a special feeling to the original line up... but I do argee with this 100%, leave Ace and Peters make-up alone. They should have came up with new characters for Singer and Tommy, just like they did with Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent back in the day. Eric Singer could have been the Lion (with his big blond hair) and Tommy... whatever. Plus more characters would have meant more action figures, ect... and more $$$... Gene and Paul dropped the ball big time by not coming up with new KISS characters for Singer and Tommy. They became their own tribute band instead of moving forward and doing something new.

On a KISS note unreleased to the DVD set... anyone have one of those Touchtunes jukeboxes at their favorite sports bar, pub or wherever? You can download any KISS song with the supersearch feature. I love rocking out some rare KISS while playing pool and having a beer. I always play Wouldn't You Like To Know Me, Seeding Back to my Baby, Sure Know Something and anything of Unmasked or Asylum. ha ha. Anyway, I went to play I Walk Alone (The only KISS song Bruce Kulick sings lead vocals on) and a completely different song played that wasn't even KISS. WTF? Poor Bruce getting the shaft again!

and on a second KISS note unreleased to the DVD Set...
Here's something for you Bruce Kulick fans, two music videos and promo for Bruce's pre-KISS band Blackjack, with someone named Michael Bolton on lead vocals.

Spiderbite 10-17-07 07:48 AM

That promo is hilarious. It felt like I was watching a Saturday Night Live skit. Love the "stache" on Bruce.

I actually remember selling their album in the record store in the early 90's. Someone re-released it due to Michael Bolton's success. If I remember correctly he was credited as Michael Boloton at that time. That first song was truly terrible. The second song was just generic rock. Yuck.

Jason 10-17-07 05:10 PM

So, I'm guessing the "Alive IV" show will be a bonus disc?

We can only hope and pray to the KISSGODS.

B5Erik 10-17-07 10:32 PM

The more I think about it, the more this really bugs me...

I love the listing for this DVD, EXCEPT what's missing.

Even with the Tiger Stadium show there are missing songs, and while that bugs me less than the missing songs from the Revenge show, it's still really lame considering how much criticism they got for the edited shows on KISSOLOGY 2, and especially considering that the Arsenio & Dick Clark performances are not included (it's not like they had another KISS movie and a bunch of TV appearances to make room for).

What should have been a great set is going to merely be good. Very good, maybe, but not great (as it should have, and could have, been).

turborobb 10-18-07 06:08 AM

off the top of my head... other stuff that could be on this...
Unplugged on Conan (Domino & Coming Home) and KISS playing live with Garth Brooks and Gin Blossoms on various late night shows (Leno and Letterman, I believe)

B5Erik 10-19-07 09:58 AM

Looks like I'll only be getting one version of KISSOLOGY 3:

KISSONLINE Q &A with Ken Gullic Sr. - VP for Fontana. Fontana distributes the KISSOLOGY DVD series. (Ken is pictured here with Gene)

KOL: Will there be three bonus discs, as there have been on the first two volumes?

KG: Yes! Three in total, on initial pressings only. 1) The KROQ Weenie Roast/Irvine, CA 6/15/96 (first reunion performance in make up) [58 minutes]; 2) Madison Square Garden/Reunion Tour 7/27/96 [1 hour, 42 minutes]; 3) Sao Paulo Brazil 8/27/94 (Revenge/Alive III tour with Sphinx stage) [1 hour, 34 minutes] Sao Paulo is my fave of the three actually. Intense performance, they look fresh... different and classic tunes. Though the Weenie Roast is a trip to see again. RETAILERS AND COMPLETE SET LISTS PER SHOW T.B.A.
The 1994 Sao Paulo show is the only bonus concert DVD that I'm interested in. Another Reunion Tour show isn't of interest to me unless it has the song, "Take Me," which they played for about 2-3 weeks.

The Sao Paulo show, though, is pretty amazing stuff. Along with the Revenge tour their 1994 gigs were fantastic shows - and I wish that I could have seen them in person.

But this does make life a little easier for me - only one to buy, none to ebay later.... ;)
