Recommend me some techno: 80's Edition
 

Feeling confident I've found some post-2000 electronic acts I've decided to look back on a decade that is rather under-represented in my electronic music collection.

I am looking for some recommendations other than these groups:

Depeche Mode - I don't like them.
Pet Shop Boys - I don't like the lead singers voice
Erasure - not a big fan of this group
New Order - I have plenty of NO.

I'm looking to help bridge a gap between Kraftwerk and the group I first heard back in 1989/1990, Technotronic.

Anything from the 80's (except noted above) and possibly even some stuff from 1990 & 1991 (to help meet up with my 90's collection).

Human League (predominantly Dare and the two albums that preceded it)
Eurythmics (well, '1984' and before, they went more pop/rock as the 80's progressed)

Japan (Tin Drum)
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (Architecture & Morality)
Ultravox (Vienna)
The Art of Noise (their 1st album)

That's what I was going to say. I would get all of their first five albums, starting with A+M, Dazzle Ships and Organisation. Great albums that still sound interesting today. It's amazing that they weren't even sold (in their original form) in the US until the late ninties...

Also, get:
Gary Numan ("The Pleasure Principle" and Tubeway Army's "Replicas")
Sparks "Number 1 in Heaven", "Angst in my Pants" and ... (Jeez, where to stop)
The Buggles' "Age of Plastic"
Scritti Politti's "Cupid '85" (not really electronica, but close)
Yaz's "Upstairs and Eric's" and "You and Me Both"
The Blue Nile's "Hats" and "A walk Across the Rooftops"
Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love" (not really electronica, but close)

Dedicated electronic music was relatively rare in the 80s, but if you consider New Order electronica, so are these bands.

acid house began in the mid to late eighties - groups where not the norm but songs were definately crafted for the genre.

With the exception of Yellow, those bands all did their best work in the early ninties.

KLF's hit song 'What Time is Love?' also came out in '88 on 12 inch vinyl

as did A Guy Called Gerald's 'Voodoo Ray'

Chicago 'House' - began in the early 80's. A junior High school class trip to the city in '85, my friend and I were introduced to it at a function for our class and we loved it.

NO is pretty borderline for me. I'll not confuse NO with say, Chemical Brothers, but there are some NO songs that I can see as more electronic than others.

And i've got KLF (slipped my mind when I posted) The White Room + Justified & Ancient.

Any good 80's House recommendations?

Aphex Twin - <i>Selected Ambient Works 85-92</i>

I have "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" and even William Orbit "Strange Cargoes The Best of" but i'm going for something a tad less ambient.

Ptolemy (Track 10) on that Aphex Twin collection sounds spot on just like an Orbital song. Of course I have no idea how many years that song predates what Orbital released.

All I have as far as Eurythmics is a "best of" but a I do like more of their earlier pre-pop/rock stuff. There is a song on there called "love is a stranger" which I enjoy the music on.

I'm also trying to avoid Industrial type music. I've got enough Ministry side projects and Nitzer Ebb to fill my need there.

"Warm Leatherette" - The Normal

I am surprised that my Eurythmics and Human League recommendations weren't even acknoledged because both of them went pop as the 80's wore on. Maybe "We Two Are One" and "Crash" aren't good 80's synth-music, but "Touch" and "Dare" sure as hell are.

I may not have said much about Human League, but your recommendations have been noted.

Tangerine Dream has been going forever, I'm sure they have something that fits into your timeslot. Certainly not House, or even what I would consider techno, but definitely electronica.

Allmusic lists them as electronica, good enough for me. You can further limit them if you choose.
