What's with "Lil" rappers?

What's with rappers using "Lil" before their names. Does this come from somewhere (Scarface, probably?). Whatever the reason, it's lame.

From wiki:
Artists with the short form for little:
Lil' 1/2 Dead, US-american rapper
Lil Boosie, US-american rapper
Lil' Bow Wow (today only Bow Wow), US-american rapper
Lil' Brotha, US-american rapper
Lil' Caesar, US-american rapper
Lil' Cease, US-american rapper
Lil Chris, British rock-singer
Lil Cuete, US-american rapper
Lil' Flip, US-american rapper
Lil' Fizz, US-american rapper and actor
Lil' Jon, US-american music producer
Lil' Keke, US-american rapper
Lil' Kim, US-american rapper
Lil' Mama, US-american rapper
Lil' Mo, US-american rapper
Lil Rob, US-american rapper
Lil' Romeo (today only Romeo), US-american actor and rapper
Lil' Scrappy, US-american rapper
Lil' Wayne, US-american rapper

Lyrics on Demand has about 100 artists with Lil in their name.

It's because they cannot spell OR sing.

mikelowry 09-11-07 01:01 AM

They all suck!

DaveWadding 09-11-07 02:09 AM

I'd be more concerned with the prevalence of "Young" rappers...

RyoHazuki 09-11-07 05:40 AM

Where's wm lopez? This thread is worthless without his gifted insight.

Supermallet 09-11-07 05:42 AM

In all fairness, Stevie Wonder started his career as "Little Stevie Wonder".

zombiezilla 09-11-07 06:25 AM

But not "Lil" Stevie, and he wasn't singing about Lil Ho's and Wee Bitches.

Yeah, but it was over four decades ago.

 Wasn't he 12 at the time? Not exactly a comparable situation.

because they cannot sing nor spell. A co-worker said it best while we were looking at the cover of the new XXL, "in the past, these guys would be the crazy homeless men you'd see walking down the street with red sweat pants and carrying toilet paper for no apparent reason. Now they're on the cover of magazines."

DJLinus 09-11-07 11:56 AM

I'm more concerned about where all the "Ice"s and "Kool/Cool"s went to.

cungar 09-11-07 12:01 PM

Al Padrino 09-11-07 07:44 PM

What exactly is the point of this other than to give the anti-rap DVD Talkers a place to say nothing they haven't said dozens of times before?

Well, I was hoping someone would answer the question. I didn't know if was a reference from Scarface or something along those lines.

You know those rap dorks like their Scarface.

cungar 09-11-07 10:37 PM

Because music journalists want to earn money from their stories, so they write about what's popular?
