Recommend me some techno.
 

I'm looking for a "best of" techno album. There seem to be a good selection when I go to the store, but I don't really know what's what. Also, I'm not looking so much for re-mixes of other pop/rock songs.

so what would you like from us? just recommendations of some good techno? or are you asking if anyone knows of a good techno compilation?

I try to avoid vocals with my techno. For compilations, just about any of the 4 disc sets will get you started. Along with what is listed above:

You want a comp of new (post 2000) techno or 90's.

I love any and all Aphex Twin. Even the tracks I hate, I love. It's all over the map, weird and layered. Selected Ambient Works Vol. 1 is a great place to start.

Orbital - In Sides. A classic album. Get it.

BT - This Binary Universe. A beautiful and glitchy album. The best BT has done.

Yes, I was looking for more compliation recommendations.

I do like some Moby, Orbital, Van Dyk and a few others. However, since I havne't heard much I can't say I like everything these guys do rather than just the items I have managed to hear.

I'll try and listed to the techno channels on Sirius this week and take note of anything that I like.

I'd say look for the MTV (gasp!) compilation "Amp". There seems to be some good songs on that first one. Stay away from the 2nd though.

You might also check out the "Hackers" soundtracks. The 2nd and 3rd aren't really from the movie, but there is still some decent stuff on them.

Armin van Buuren's A State of Trance is a good way to go.

Along those lines The Saint: Music From The Motion Picture is not a bad compilation either. "Dream Within A Dream" is a solid track.

Haven't heard it in quite a while, and in fact I think I may have sold it off at some point, but I remember the Digital Empire: Electronica's Best compilation to be really good. Vol. 2 wasn't as good though, the original was real solid.

Underworld: Second Toughest of the Infants: trance/house/IDM banger

Orbital: 2 (the brown one) and In-Sides : still the definitive "techno" band, IMO.

The KLF: The White Room and Chill Out: house classic and the first true ambient techno album

Saint Etienne: So Tough and Foxbase Alpha: beautiful, summery pop albums

Roni Size: New Forms: huge, sprawling jungle/ dub-and-bass/garage album

The Orb: UFOrb, ambient dub/chill out milestone

Squarepusher: Hard Normal Daddy: my personal favorite drum-and-bass album

808 State: (Utd States) 90: one of the earliest "good" techno albums. Still sounds great

Basement Jaxx: Remedy: sweaty R+B club milestone

Slam: Headstates- really hard to find but influential techno album

Massive Attack: Protection and Mezzanine: trip-hop started and ended here.

Tricky: Maxinquaye: sexy as all hell trip-hop

Meat Beat Manifesto: Storm the Studio and Satyricon: way ahead of its time industrial techno from the late eighties/early ninties

LTJ Bukem: Logical Progression Vol 1: yet another drum-n-bass double album (I like the genre) but this one is justifyably very famous

Aphex Twin: Selected Ambient Works Vol 1: somewhat hard to find but amazing ambient collection

Boards of Canada: Music Has a Right To Children: beautiful IDM classic, a must buy, IMO

Paul Van Dyk: Out There and Back: a good overview of trance

Fatboy Slim: You've Come a Long Way Baby: state of the art big beat circa 1997

Kruder and Dorfmeister: The K+D Sessions: Euro-dub classic

Prodigy: Music for the Jilted Generation and Fat of the Land: still sounds great to me

Based on what has been said above, and what I heard tonight, I think I would be well served to look into A&B, Paul van Dyk or Armin Van Buuren.

For what it's worth, I'm not that deep into techno <i>by any measure</i>, BUT Aphex Twin's <i>Selected Ambient Works 85-92</i> is a fantastic album, very chill and easy to relax to.
