R.E.M.: Live CD/DVD - 10/16/07

R.E.M. to Release LIVE CD/DVD

Despite the fact that their shows have been the subjects of films like Tourfilm and Road Movie, R.E.M. have never released a live CD and DVD in combination. This will change on October 16 with the release of the bluntly titled R.E.M. LIVE CD/DVD.

Filmed by director Blue Leach, R.E.M. LIVE documents the band's performance at Dublin's Point Theatre on February 27, 2005 as part of a 116-date world tour that year.

The 22-song set features some of R.E.M.'s best songs, including "The One I Love", "Man on the Moon", "Everybody Hurts", "Cuyahoga", "Orange Crush", and "(Don't Go Back to) Rockville". Also included is a previously unreleased cut called "I'm Gonna DJ".

R.E.M. seem to be quite fond of Dublin lately. They're currently holed up there, recording a new album with producer Jacknife Lee. And their recently relaunched remdublin.com chronicles their time in the city.

R.E.M. LIVE:

1 I Took Your Name
2 So Fast, So Numb
3 Boy in the Well
4 Cuyahoga
5 Everybody Hurts
6 Electron Blue
7 Bad Day
8 Ascent of Man
9 Great Beyond
10 Leaving New York
11 Orange Crush
12 I Wanted to Be Wrong
13 Final Straw
14 Imitation of Life
15 The One I Love
16 Walk Unafraid
17 Losing My Religion
18 What's the Frequency, Kenneth?
19 Drive
20 (Don't Go Back to) Rockville
21 I'm Gonna DJ [previously unreleased]
22 Man on the Moon

----------

Tracklist is a little heavy on cuts from their sub-par last LP but I'm a big fan and I'll be picking this up.

This band hasn't really mattered since 'Automatic For The People'**

** With the exception of 'Bang and Blame', which is an REM top-ten song.

"Let's release a DVD of us performing songs from an album no one on the planet liked."

"Great idea Mike."

What a dreadful set list. Almost completely ignores the IRS years which as far as I'm concerned is the main reason they're considered a great band.

I wanna DJ?

I wanna heave.

Who knows. Maybe some of the songs from the last album will translate better in a live setting.

Bill Berry, we miss you. :(

they don't - i saw them in STL on this tour (10/04) and the tracks from around the sun were the downpoint of the show.

yep. although i liked up and thought it was an interesting and understandable departure for the group, they really have never recovered. it's sad that their best releases from the past 10 years or so are new adventures in hi-fi (recorded during soundchecks for the monster tour) and the IRS retrospective from last year (which let me retire a couple of boots due to the inclusion of the "theme from two steps onward" and the original "bad day").

I think the problem with REM growing up is that most like most bands they were only capable of galvanizing one great musical style. REM's great musical style was offbeat guitar driven rock with a singer with an unusual vocal style that was sometimes hard to understand.Combined with their lyrical content that often breathed new life into Southern stereotypes made them the most original American band of their generation.

Their attempts to refashion their sound into and Aphex Twins/Radiohead electro pop band has failed on most levels.

I'm not interested in any R.E.M. concert footage post-1984. That was around the time they became a band full of preening, prancing rock stars.
