Ah, yes! I knew the movie thing, that's why I was unsure of the song title. Thank you! Wasn't there a video made as well, or am I imagining things again? I know the song was omitted from the US release of the album it's from.

I always love being lectured on politics by someone who talks to fairies or someone else in black make-up. Most of the time, I prefer most musicians to keep their opinions to themselves and just make good music.

The 'alternative' radio station in KC plays this every so often and regardless of what message it's giving, it's easily one of the worst songs I've ever heard.

zach de la rocha's march of death. classic! i hope RATM play this one day.

I was born with the voice of a riot, a storm
Lightening the function, the form
Far from the norm, I wont follow like cattle
I'm more like a catalyst; calm in the mix of battle
Who let the cowboy on the saddle? He don't know a missle from a gavel
Para terror troopin flippin loops of death upon innocent flesh
But I'm back in the cipher my foes and friends
With a verse and a pen, against a line I won't toe or defend
Instead I curse at the murderous men in suits of professionals who act like animals
This man child, ruthless and wild
Who gonna chain this beast back on the leash?
This Texas Furor (Führer), for sure a, compassionless con who serve a
Lethal needle to the poor. The cure for crime is murder?

On the left, left, right, left
But it's just the march of death

On the left, left, right, left
But it's just the march of death

Here it comes the sound of terror from above
He flex his Texas twisted tongue
The poor lined up to kill in desert slums
For oil that boil beneath the desert sun
Now we split flame we flip this game
All the targets are taking aim
All targets are taking aim
We're the targets, they're taking aim

Wow only one mention about NIN, and no mention of the song that relates specifically to him... Capital G

I pushed a button and elected him to office and a
He pushed a button and it dropped a bomb
You pushed a button and could watch it on the television
Those motherfuckers didn't last too long ha ha
I'm sick of hearing 'bout the haves and the have nots
Have some personal accountability
The biggest problem with the way that we've been doing things is
The more we let you have the less that I'll be keeping for me

Well I used to stand for something
Now I'm on my hands and knees
Traded in my God for this one
He signs his name with a Capital G

Don't give a shit about the temperature in Guatemala
Don't really see what all the fuss is about
Ain't gonna worry bout no future generations and a
I'm sure somebody's gonna figure it out
Don't try to tell me that some power can corrupt a person
You haven't had enough to know what it's like
You're only angry 'cause you wish you were in my position
Now nod your head because you know that I'm right—all right!

Well I used to stand for something
But forgot what that could be
There's a lot of me inside you
Maybe you're afraid to see

Well I used to stand for something
Now I'm on my hands and knees
Traded in my God for this one
He signs his name with a Capital G

Subway to Sally, "Falsher Heiland"
[Translated from German by yours truly. Not perfect, but good enough.]

We have spent the day praying,
We beg you every night,
Your word before my eyes, your picture on the wall,
Printed and spread across the country.

You have betrayed us, sold out and laughed,
You have never achieved a miracle for us,
There is only revenge for your fraud,
There is no pity - enough is enough.

You are the false savior,
This is your judgment day.
We sing and we dance
And piss on your grave.
Hallelujah, false savior.

You preached to us and gave teachings,
Never healed the lame or blind,
You promised wealth, lies were told,
And tormented us with holy songs.

We went to war with faith in you,
There we are, it gave no victory,
There is only revenge for your fraud.
There is no pity - enough is enough.

We will look for you with angelic patience.
We will find you. You will pay your debt.
There is only revenge for your fraud.
There is no pity - enough is enough.

Bruce Cockburn's "All Our Dark Tomorrows" from You've Never Seen Everything (2002):
The village idiot takes the throne
His the wind in which all must sway
All sane people, die now
Be lifted up and carried away
You've got no home in this world of sorrows

There's a parasite feeding on
Everybody's bag of rage
What goes out returns again
To smite the mouth and burn the page
Under the rain of all our dark tomorrows

I can see in the dark; it's where I used to live
I see excess and the gaping need
Follow the money - see where it leads
It's to shrunken men stuffed up with greed
They meet and make plans in strange half-lit tableaux

Under the rain of all our dark tomorrows
You've got no home in this world of sorrows
Another from Cockburn is "Tell the Universe" from Life Short Call Now (2006):
Tell the universe what you've done
Out in the desert with your smoking gun
Looks like you've been having too much fun
Tell the universe what you've done

Tell the universe what you took
While the heavens trembled and the mountains shook
All those lives not worth a second look
Tell the universe what you took

You've been projecting your shit at the world
Self-hatred tarted up as payback time
You can self destruct-that's your right
But keep it to yourself if you don't mind

Tell the universe where you've been
With your bloodstained shoes and your dunce's grin
Got to identify next of kin
Tell the universe where you've been
Bob Seger's "No More" from his last album Face the Promise (2006)(As a bonus, the song is simply gorgeous):
Are you sorry when the lights begin to fade
Are you sorry for the promises you made
For the burden of the ones who had to fall
When you didn't see the writing on the wall

It was forty years ago when I was young
and the jungle not the desert heard the guns
Someone said they had a secret plan
and the rest of us were told to understand

Well I don't want this, no I don't want this
I have had enough no more

Tomorrow is the price for yesterday
A billion waves won't wash the truth away
Someday you'll be ordered to explain
No one gets to walk between the rain
And I don't want this, no I don't want this
I have had enough no more
No I don't want this no I don't want this
I have had enough no more
No more
"No one gets to walk between the rain" is a brilliant lyric.

"Symptom", by Canadian rapper Baba Brinkman, from his Lit Hop album:

Citizens of the United States, your politicians are out of control. It's time to take responsibility.

Bush is just a symptom of the ignorant citizens who elected him
A simpleton in a crib full of infants
It's as if a woman afraid of intercourse married an impotent man
And the cycle begins again

The President is a reflection of your national temperament
So no wonder you're sensitive but I'm trying to make sense of this
'Cause even if he did cheat to win both elections
Even with no deception he would have been a close second
So there's really no consensus just a polarized electorate
With both sides protected by their own misconceptions
So many well-intentioned souls with loaded weapons
Arms control begins at home it's no question
Why the 21st century has been a disgrace
It's 'cause the United States keeps shooting their friends in the face
The money wasted on wars could be spent in better ways
But the President gets away with "whatever it takes"
Maybe it's just a phase in the democratic process
A population with an apathetic consciousness
Is going to end up with some bastards in office
At least until the problem is solved by the same people who caused it

Bush is just a symptom of the ignorant citizens who elected him
A simpleton in a crib full of infants
It's as if a woman afraid of intercourse married an impotent man
And the cycle begins again

It's no wonder your President's as dense as a fence post
It's a direct result of those who neglected to vote
Oh you don't think so? Come on look at the trends
John Kerry had to pretend that he couldn't speak French
And if you're always going to resent intelligent women and men
Then you'll never have another Jefferson
And the consequence of indifference goes beyond borders
'Cause now the burden of peace rests on a neocon's shoulders
And the war goes on even without Saddamn's orders
It's a melting pot of brown yellow black and blonde soldiers
And the bombs over Baghdad have tags attached
That read courtesy of American non-voters
And as Iraq smolders there's trouble at home
And now the President sits on a crumbling throne
And every piece that falls off is a stumbling stone
Until he's left in the rubble alone

Bush is just a symptom of the ignorant citizens who elected him
A simpleton in a crib full of infants
It's as if a woman afraid of intercourse married an impotent man
And the cycle begins again

This is just a little message from your neighbors to the North
You know, the ones you impersonate when you visit foreign shores
'Cause they spit in your face whenever you step outside your borders
Universal outrage when your President signs orders
You've got this huge economy, beautiful music and comedy
And some of the worst abuses of democracy on Earth
I hear your bombs and rockets burst and all I've got is words
But I've also got supporters and American friends
Determined to make sure this age of arrogance ends
So they never have to apologize embarrassed again
When they discuss themselves... relax, bloody hell
My great grandmother was a Southern belle
Just like I've got California cousins that I love as well
But your government's a tougher sell as you can tell
I got a thing for rap so thanks for that but you can have your tanks back
And the next chance you Yanks have to change tracks
For God's sakes ACT!

Bush is just a symptom of the ignorant citizens who elected him
A simpleton in a crib full of infants
It's as if a woman afraid of intercourse married an impotent man
And the cycle begins again

I prefer to do my own thinking and research on those fronts and I don't need Springsteen to tell me to vote for Kerry just because I like 'Born to Run'. Almost borders on propaganda.

So, it's because the musicians are dumb and uninformed, then?

What if they're intelligent and well-informed and they happen to agree with you and put it to song? It's ok then?

What if they're intelligent and well-informed and they happen to disagree with you and put it to song? Would that be ok?

What if they're acting on emotion and not information, and have some idealistic ideas that if we all could just Imagine a world of peace, Imagine heaven on earth, Imagine no wars, then we might be able to make the world, if not perfect, at least better than it currently is? Should they just shut up about it and not write any songs about that?

I'm not the one that gets offended by an artist putting a little bit of themselves into their art. In fact, I pretty much demand it. Otherwise, it's usually just mindless drivel.

Yeah, the point of artists is expression... whether it's their religion, personal experiences, political and world views, etc. So I certainly have no problem with that, and I own many which I even disagree with but still enjoy the music and artistry.

Now, whether they are successful at it is another matter entirely. Frankly I find a lot of these lyrics pretty amateurish and pathetic...but that's just me.

I think these right wingers only object to an artist's political opinions when they dare to differ from their own. It can go both ways of course, but I have never heard of a leftist boycotting Bruce Willis, Bo Derek, Adam Sandler, et al, for ideological reasons. The indignant bleating about celebrities' political views almost invariably comes from conservatives.

Upon a rereading, it does seem so. But a while back, before they redid their website, there was a section explaining the ideas behind the lyrics. Instead of a paragraph, there was just a picture of Dubya, of course, looking like an idiot.

Also, the single's cover.
