how do you determine your cd purchases?

regardless of who it is unless they are my favourite artist i have to like more than half the album in order to buy it.

i have a friend that will buy any release of a band he likes regardless if its their worst one.

is anyone like that?

Is it right in front of me?
Is it less than the amount of money I have in my pocket?

That about does it.

I try to only purchase albums that I have heard and enjoy or are fairly well reviewed by publications/websites I tend to agree with. That being the case, there are certain bands that I love that I will buy their new album no matter how crappy or badly reviewed it is. The last R.E.M. record comes to mind.

There are certain bands that I will always buy their new releases, but they are few. With the rest I download them first to see how they are. If they are good, I buy them. If not, I don't.

1. Did I enjoy listening to the whole album when I downloaded it first? -or- Did it "stick out" in my mind?
2. Is the CD reasonably priced for what it's worth? -or- Am I a "fan" of the artist?

Changed to what I do, since it's easier.

In store play means alot to me...and I don't mean those lice-disease-ridden listening kiosks.

I will purchase something heard over the sound system while shopping for specific "needs".

If I'm on the fence I'll usually listen to some samples online to convince me. I'm not a downloader, so that's usually not an option for me. I'm pretty good at knowing what I like at this point so I don't fuck up that often. Every now and then I buy an album I'm not nuts about, but sometimes I'll rediscover those later and come to enjoy them more.

I have stopped giving new albums a chance over the past few years. At this point, I only buy the albums of bands I want to support or albums that I fell in love with. There's so many legitimate legal ways to listen to new albums these days that I don't need to buy it first to find out if it's worth a purchase.

I've found the "favorite artists" just as disappointing and uneven...for me, I mainly purchase reissues, and then, ONLY if I read a review of it.

The Old Farts are sometimes just as bad as taking a chance on anyone new.

I download the albums in MP3 off of usenet or torrents. If I like the album enough, I will by the CD.

Even the bands or singers I like, sometimes release crap, so I need to hear the whole album before I shell out $10-$18.

If it's remastered or a new release by an artist I like, I buy it.

If it's unremastered or a new release I'm not sure I will love, I download it.
