Cure to Release Double Album
 

The Cure recently spoke to Billboard about their upcoming thirteenth year together and they detailed plans to celebrate the ominous anniversary. Mastermind Robert Smith noted:

"Rather than cut it down, at the stage we're at with the band, I'm making this record because I want to enjoy the process and be proud of the finished result. It isn't a commercial concern for me.

What will probably happen is that a double album will come out like a limited edition, mixed by me. A single-disc version, which I assume will be primarily chosen by the label, might get mixed by someone else in order to have a different thing. There's a concern Cure fans will feel like they have to get both, but the fact is, I've agreed to sell the double version at a single album price, because I feel that strongly about it. It is almost impossible to get a double album nowadays. I naively thought my standing as an artist would push aside all objections, but the world gets ever more commercial as it turns."

Songs will include "Lusting Here in Your Mind" ("It sounds suspiciously like heavy rock to me," Smith says), "The Hungry Ghost," "The Perfect Boy," "Christmas Without You" ("That's not a very happy song," he says) and "Please Come Home."

Smith promises the Cure will play new material during its fall North American tour, but not too much.

:hscratch: Maybe their 30th year together, but not their thirteenth.

Also, I'm looking forward to this. I think I'm in the minority when I say that I think Bloodflowers and S/T are two of their best albums.

That's what I get for a c/p job. Maybe their 13th studio album?

Could it be thirteen years for this lineup, maybe?

I'd counter they haven't made a "great" album since Disintigration (and there is no doubt in my mind they will never equal that masterpiece again)
"Wish" and "Bloodflowers" were both good
but I agree anything else was pure rubbish

Man, I can't think of a bad album they've made since Disintegration. But let's thank Arpeggi for again not contributing anything of value to a discussion.

I personally dont like Wild Mood Swings, but the others are all pretty damned good, IMO.

"Wish" is still one of my favorite albums from that era of the band. "Disintegration" is easily the band's greatest acheivement, however.

I think I am one of the few whose favorite Cure album is not Disintegration. I like Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me the best.

My personal favorite is The Head On The Door.

based on the quality of their last "effort", i think i'll skip this one and continue to eagerly await the remaster of disintegration.

The best Cure album is Seventeen Seconds.

Because saying "I'm all over this" was a really nice contribution to this thread.

i lived and died by Wish for awhile...favorite cure albums are a total matter of opinion.
i don't see how one can totally write them off as a band based on the newer albums, it's not like they have ever totally changed their sound, the basic sound of the cure is always there

Disintegration is 1 of the 2 greatest rock albums ever made...it'll never be equaled again.

I like Wish and WMS a great deal. BF was a sub-par effort. But this one sounds encouraging.

sweet, a new cure album, i only liked 2 songs on their last album the self titled. actually i only have the greatest hits album, good enough for me.

I've been a Cure fan since 1982. Cure fans have always been split down the middle on which kind of Cure albums are the best. I personally like all the Cure albums. The S/T one wasn't their best, but that can be attributed to Ross Robinson and all the infighting it caused within the band. The next ablum should be good with Robert Smith back producing. I can't wait.

I actually like Ross Robinson and liked the fact that they recorded the album live..wouldn't this album be on Ross Robinson's label still since they have a 3 album deal?

Here's my album ranking list:

1. Disintegration (Even though it's the predictable choice, but dammit, it's just flawless for me! Without a doubt one of the albums I've heard the most in my life)
2. The Head On The Door (Just pure pop bliss. Well, except for Sinking, which just leaves you as if you've heard Pornography instead. Speaking of...)
3. Pornography (This and KMKMKM are pretty much interchangeable in number, though I'll give the slighter edge to Pornography, if only because it musically marked the end of an era for the band)
4. Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (I actually love the length and scope of this record; it's like their White Album, a nice eclectic mix of every style they were known for at that point. Plus, Fight is one of the most unusual yet awesome songs they've ever done)
5. Three Imaginary Boys (This comes at 5 just 'cause they've obviously gotten so much more ambitious since then, but this is as good as Jam/Buzzcocks inspired '79 post punk gets)
6. Seventeen Seconds (Their most relaxing out of the 1-2-3 gloom KO. There's not much distance between this and Faith in terms of rating)
7. Faith (The title song is probably one of my top 5 Cure songs)
8. Wish (This had some of their best singles ever, plus FTEOTDGS and End were nice acknowledgments of their love for the shoegaze scene, esp. Ride, but the rest of it is a bit fluff, and that was disappointing coming on the heels of Disintegration. But since this has the best guitar playing Porl's done for the group, it still comes at a decent 8)
9. Bloodflowers (At the point it came out, I actually never expected this to be as good as it is. They were treading familiar ground and playing it safe with their whole "last part of a trilogy" but this as a concept works pretty good, though I prefer the 9 song version, which is the most known anyways)
10. The Top (Just an all around mess of an album, it's pretty easy to see that Robert's head was in a pretty schizophrenic state in here. At least it's not an all bad mess. Shake Dog Shake still rocks like a motherfucker)
11. Wild Mood Swings (The different recording sessions and musicians don't help this in the least bit. It sounds like a collection of b-sides, and not good ones at that. After the S/T came out, I guess I've come to appreciate it a bit. Want is a great opener and Bare is probably one of the best acoustic things they've done)
12. The Cure (Contrary to Bloodflowers, I had expectations for this, and it turned out a hugely disappointing album;it almost made me wish that they had broken up after this. Luckily, Porl is back and I have faith again. To this day I still can't stand anything from this)

I didn't include Boys Don't Cry because it's just the US version of TIB with different tracklisting and some omitted songs, and if I'm not mistaken Robert hates that version. (He even goes so far as to say World War is the worst song they ever put out).

I've liked your lists so far. What I also like about most Cure fans is that they always have interesting reasons for liking individual albums.

It should be interesting also to make a b-sides ranking list, since they have so many great ones. Here's my suggestion
