The first time I heard "I Wanna Be Your Lover" from Prince in 1979. I thaught his R&B/funk sound with his falsetto voice was very unique. He was a virtual unknown at the time. Then 3 short years later when he released his epic "1999" album his genious was firmly established.

I also remember the first time I heard the advanced single "When Doves Cry" around June of '84. It blew me away at the time and even the DJ who was playing it was in awe of the track. This was well before the movie our soundtrack to "Purple Rain" had been released

"Let me tell you about the last time I was in Oregon" lol nope that's not it, I have all of their officially released material.

I should Clarify by saying that the place sold TONS of bootleg stuff but the sound quality of the recording was excellent.

call me morbid, call me pale, I've spent six years on your trail...
Half A Person by The Smiths

Workin' On The Highway by Bruce Springsteen
what's weird is that, growing up in the 80's, I never felt the influence of Springsteen (I was 15 in 1985, and wasn't a fan of music). A friend gave me a mix tape in 1990 that had a couple of Springsteen songs, and it was good enough for me to investigate his entire catalog.

Friend of P by The Rentals
Again...fairly recently, although they've been around since '95, but I didn't get the hint until 2005. Love em.

The Sweater Song by Weezer
I was in bartending school in 1995, and there was a jukebox we could listen to during breaks. I kept playing this song, mainly because some red-headed kid said he hated it. The more I played it, the more I loved it.

Lies by Billy Talent
I'm still discovering some great stuff by this band.

Again, it's strange how people are listing more than 1 when "favorite artist" is by definition 1.

Anyway, I bought The Bends (Radiohead) because I saw the video for "Fake Plastic Trees" on MTV. I liked the song so I picked up the album. The Bends went into solid rotation and I bought OK Computer on release day, before the crowds. The song that put Radiohead over the top from that day was "Paranoid Android". It is conceivably still one of my favorite songs, but has some competition...

My favorite varies but these are some. Not the first song I heard by them but the song that made me love them and buy lots more of their albums.

The Fall - The N.W.R.A. (If I have to pick one this is it)
X - The World's a Mess; It's in my Kiss
Devo - Gut Feeling/Slap Your Mammy
AC/DC - Hell's Bells
David Bowie - Oh! You Pretty Things
Iggy Pop - Lust for Life probably
