"Gabriel's Oboe" from The Mission sndtrk.

Otherwise, I would say that I'm never moved to tears by lyrics alone, as the accompanying music must always be beautiful as well. So the no lyrics part of this thread is mostly a redundancy on my part and thus my choices in the other "so beautiful you cry" thread apply here as well.

I will also add "The Heart Asks Pleasure First" and "The Promise" by Michael Nyman, from The Piano, and Clint Mansell's "Together We Will Live Forever" from The Fountain.

Quiet - Rachael Yamagata

She's got a real soothing jazz voice and that song is really sad and beautiful (even if you don't listen to the words).

I did a paper on Hate music back in college and it focused on George Hawthorne aka George Burdi formerly of the band Rahowa. Anyway I picked up a Rahowa CD to listen to it and there was one song on there that was "beautiful" sounding. The song was about Hitler, which killed it, but the music itself was incredible and I kept thinking if this wasn't racist it would be brilliant. And his voice was perfect for the song, very passionate. I can't remember the name of the song but it had 1945 in the title. Ok, so I didn't tear up, but I've never listened to another song were I hated what the song stood for, but respected the musicianship so much.

Now, Burdi has given up white supremacy and is with Novacosm and they are pretty good. Glad he gave up the hate-crap and is doing something positive. He has a unique voice and hope he does more music.

I just re-read the title of this thread where it says not the lyrics so my choices don't really fit.

Bob
That would be Butterfly Kisses.

This one would be lyrics too but "Sara beth" by Rascal Flatts.

I thought the non-album track: "Sts'ikei" from Hope of the States is an epic heartbreaking song, that not only is fragile and beautiful at one point, it crescendos to a frenzy peak - where it sounds and feels like the song has extracted your soul and thrown into the stratosphere.

"Caroline No" from the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds is one off the top of my head.

Oh....

And "Philadelphia" by Neil Young. That may have to do with that scene from the movie too. Thats a killer.

"Rhapsody In Blue" hands down. That piece is a breathtaking emotional roller coaster.

A Change Is Gonna Come - Sam Cooke

I Can't Stop Loving You
Born to Lose
Crying Time

All from the incomparable Ray Charles.

Not to mention Jerry Goldsmith's themes from:

Hoosiers (Celebration and Epilogue)
Papillon (Devil's Island)
The Final Conflict (Second Coming)

'Don't Give Up' - Peter Gabriel / Kate Bush

The lyrics are great, but just the way they sing that song can move me.

Also the instrumental that opens 'Hudsucker Proxy'. The big crescendo that hits right after the voice over is heavenly. I think its based on another piece of music, but I'm not sure.

Charlie- That piece is the sublime adagio from Aram Khatchaturian's opera Spartacus--slightly tweaked by Carter Burwell for the Coens.

It was used in its original form liberally throughout the infamous Caligula as well.

Thanks, Geoorge. I'm going to check it out. On the way home from work, I heard a local station saying they'd be playing this exact opera this weekend during 'Opera Hour' or something.

I'm not always in the best place emotionally, and the song and video for Kwoon, "I Lived On the Moon" broke me over the weekend. I liked that the lyrics are printed at the bottom of that page, too.
