Well shit, if we're doing second verses now, then it's:

Life is (too short)
So love the one you got
Because you might get run over or you might get shot
Never start no static
I just get it off my (chest)
Never had to battle with no bulletproof (vest)
Take a small example, take a tip from me
Take all of your money and give it up to charity
Lovin's what I got, it's within my reach
(And the Sublime style is still straight from Long Beach)
It all comes back to you
You're bound to get what you deserve
Try and test that
You're bound to get served
Love's what I got
Don't start a riot
You feel it when the dance gets hot

This is maybe the best opening line in the history of pop songs. Insight into both characters after only one line.

Helter Sklelter was the first thing I thought of, so another vote for that...

Also...

"William Zanzinger killed poor Hattie Carroll
With a cane that he twirled around his diamond ring finger"
--Dylan, Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll (also perhaps the best named song ever...)

"Hey, hey, mama, said the way you move
Gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove."

Ghosts of the Great Highway is a great album. Nice Choice!

The Wilco openers on this thread are all memorable too.

Here are a couple of my favs:

I lit out from Reno & was trailed by twenty hounds
Didn't get to sleep that night 'til the morning came around.
- The Grateful Dead

Well, my daddy didn’t pull out, but he never apologized.

Lupus took the life of Flannery O'Connor; she wrote many books before death came upon her.
- Killdozer, "Lupus"

He was born in the summer of his 27th year, comin' home to a place he'd never been before.
- John Denver, "Rocky Mountain High"

Everyone's makin’ a big deal out of the fact that I raped someone - what's the crime? I had fun.
- The Frogs, "Raped"

Under a loop of stars in the vulgar cold the dead airport lay by the pebbles of the highway.
- Tim Buckley, "Monterey"

She's under-age and she's underweight and she's one month hooked and two months late.
- Rupert Holmes, "Partners in Crime"

It's been said before but I'll repeat it; don't you feel like you've been cheated?
- Nomeansno, "Small Parts Isolated and Destroyed"

God never really did like Man, anyway - at least not after they started walking around on their hind legs and talking on the telephone.
- The Residents, "Godsong"

The first thing I thaught of when I read this topic was:

"Dearly beloved....we are gathered here today to get thru this thing called life....etc"
Prince - "Let's Go Crazy""

I know you want to leave me but I refuse to let you go. If I have to beg and plead for your sympathy"
Temptations- "Ain't Too Proud To Beg"

" A little ditty about Jack & Diane. Two American kids growin' up in the heartland"
Jack & Diane - John Mellencamp
