GOOD Elton John songs that were NEVER on the radio

Elton John put out one chart-topping album after another during the 1970's, and quite a handful of chart-topping singles to go along with them, but I wonder if there are some really good album tracks that were never singles, and were never played on the radio.

What hidden treasures can I look into?

I like Jamaica Jerk-Off and Social Disease

I always loved "Grimsby" off of Caribou. I'm sure once I get started I'll think of about a dozen. Elton John was (other than The Beatles), probably the first artist of whom I bought albums, rather than just singles, especially since his peak years, artistically and creatively, coincided with my becoming aware of pop music and pop music radio.

Caught on to Elton late in life, were any of the following hits of his?
Ballad of a Well Known Gun
Levon
I've Seen that Movie Too
Tower of Babel
Amoreena
I Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself
Funeral for a Friend

Everything from Honky Chateau except Honky Cat and Rocket Man.

Levon was top 25. I think that's the only one released as a single.

6 Posts and you guys have stolen all my answers. "Everything from Honky Chateau except Honky Cat and Rocket Man." That's about right. Mona Lisa's and Mad Hatters is one of his greatest.

I love "Don't wanna go on with you like that".

Captain Fantastic (the song)
Burn Down the Mission
My Father's Gun
Into the Old Man's Shoes
Sixty Years On
Teacher I Need You
Lady Samantha

I don't know.. would "Take Me To The Pilot" count.. it was released as an A side, but the B side ("Your Song") had waaaaaay more airplay and replaced "Take Me To The Pilot" as the A side.

That's a solid set of songs. Kudos.

I forgot "Burn Down the Mission" wasn't a hit, considering the song is so frackin' awesome.

The whole of Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, with excpetion of "Someone Saved My Life Tonight."
His best album IMHO.

Harmony (as far as I know it wasn't a radio hit)

My favorite song of his, easily, is Madman Across the Water - not the one from the album of the same name though - but the outtake version that's a bonus track on the previous album, Tumbleweed Connection.

It wasn't but it was played about 8000 times at my high school dances for the slow dance. Along with TVC15 by David Bowie and Philidelphia Freedom.

Dubya 02-02-07 01:28 PM

"Curtains" off of Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy

I'd highly reccomend the "Live in Australia" CD he released. Has a lot of the songs listed above.

that sucks. I hope knowing that doesn't ruin the song for me. :(

Anyone who only knows Elton for the schlocky publicity hound he is today, should check out 11-17-70, his early live LP. It shows how rawly talented he was in the beginning and how hard he could rock.
