Vinyl marketplace?

Hello!

I'm a big proponent of purchasing my vinyl from places like local stores, eBay, and straight from the labels. I'm always looking for new outlets, though.

Anyone know of any good online vinyl communities? Something like the one here at DVDTalk has with DVDs. It'd be nice to have a place to talk about records, and maybe even buy, sell, and trade.

Thanks!
Austin

I dunno. GEMM maybe? Outside of Ebay and local I don't know where I'd look. I went on a binge recently driving around Atlanta to record stores picking up vinyl that never did make it to CD.

I'm sure you've scoured Craigslist, if you've gone to ebay. I see huge lots of vinyl for cheap all the time on there. It makes me want to go purchase a turntable, although I don't have the room.

since this is the latest vinyl thread, thought i'd add:
10% off coupon code fall2006 still works at www.insound.com.
also, free first class shipping for orders over $50.

just pre-ordered neon bible and some other records.

Anyone know any good online vinyl record stores based in Canada? They must also carry new/sealed releases (i.e. indie, altrock, reissues, etc). Thanks.

You, sir, have just cost me a lot of money! Do you know if the code is reusable?

Thanks!

I ordered one record from a German seller on there, and everything went smoothly, but that's as far as my experience goes.

soulstrut.com
waxidermy.com
garagepunk.com

but be warned, this isn't a place to talk about generic stuff like Zepplin, Elvis or the Beatles. They're more places were obscure records are traded and talked about, at least on SS and Waxidermy. Pokara Book lp's, Private Press, local lp's etc... Both SS and WAX are a little heavy on the Jazz and Soul stuff, but you can get some decent prog/psych discussions going with the right people. There are also buy/sell/trade forums that often have many dealers you'd find at the Texas, Utretch or major NY shows.

One of my favorite NYC stores, Generation Records, just launched their own mailorder site. Prices seem pretty fair, but their selection is really good. If you friend them on myspace, they occasionally send out discount codes. Not one up at the moment, but i'll post them as I get 'em.

www.generationrecords.com

And while we're speaking of discount codes... anyone have anything current for insound?

I've been looking for some rare metal records, but most stores don't keep updated used inventories. I'm specifically looking for the rare Opeth vinyl. I think I've spent the past week checking every site (new or used) but no dice. I've checked all the places in this thread (among many others).

If anyone knows a shop that specializes in metal or whatever, let me know.

Thanks.

Anyone have a suggestion on where to get a turntable. I would eventually like to "dabble" in DJing (basically playing around with it for fun, not for profit or for an audience) so I'd want an turntable that could do that stuff (I guess what's the term, not belt driven).

Where can I buy one and what would you recommend?

Technics 1200. Accept no substitute. The motors on these things are basically indestructible, so I'd even suggest buying a pair off craigslist or your local Buy & Sell. Just make sure the tonearm isn't bent and you're gold!

Several years back i ordered a few Charles Mingus records from this place: http://www.dustygroove.com/

Actually i got some Mingus and Holiday albums for my wife from there. They had decent prices and quality stuff.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but since all the vinyl fans will be seeing it, I hope it's OK if I mention a very obscure, very wonderful album that has never been released on CD. It's called "Good Clean Fun" by Bonnie Hayes With The Wild Combo. It's from 1982. Bonnie lets you download 3 of its songs for free ("Girls Like Me," "Shelley's Boyfriend," and "Coverage") at this link:

http://www.bonniehayes.com/files/sampletunes.htm

And here's a great review of it:

Anybody have info on artistdirect.com? They're selling a lot of vinyl, and I wanted to make sure its a quality product and not just CD to LP transfers or something. (notice that's not typed LP to CD, since that's what you normally see =] )

As far as import vinyl goes, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that amazon.co.uk charges the same to ship LPs as they do CDs - I recently ordered 2 LPs from them and shipping was only #4.07. Considering most places charge #5 for 1, that's a really nice deal.

Of course, their selection is limited, but if you're looking for a newer release that'd be where I'd check first.
